My father first let me hear this album when I was about 15 years old. It just so happens he had it on wax with all the snap crackle and pop on it. Considering I was into Isaac Hayes, I really got into the story behind the album. David Porter takes the listeners through his heart-felt love story of a man in love with another man's woman. This album preceeded all the skits that have become popular in most rap albums. If you listen to "The Masquerade is Over" you can hear where rappers such as LL Cool J, The RZA, Biggie Smalls (Who shot ya) and Prince Paul all sampled Porter's Memphis String's sound. For all the Stax sounds fans, this is a must have. Trust a 24 year old funk fan...it's a classic!

I really enjoyed being able to listen to this particular album/CD in my adult years, it brings back happy family memories. However, Mr. Porter had recorded a couple of other albums before this one. One in particular I'm looking for has a song on it called "Hang on Sloopy" or "Snoopy" this is the song I would really love hearing again, but unfortunately, I can't find his previous albums anywhere. Any assistance or suggestions you or our fellow music lovers have to offer will be truly appreciated.

Lacking the flamboyance or sexy bedroom shaking baritone voices of Issac Hayes or Barry White, David Porter (actually the other half of the Hayes/Porter Memphis Shoals songwriting hit team of the '60s) manages to pull off an interesting concept album. - - In all truth, minus the little skits and stories between the songs, I don't know if this album would necessarily be so memorable - - in the mood for that particular musical vibe, I'd probably go for some Billy Paul myself, however, Porter's dramatic rendition of THE MASQUERADE IS OVER is definitely is a strong point and worth the price of the album alone (I've been listening to it over and over again for a few years.) - - Its soulful, but if you haven't heard it before its probably very different than anything you've ever heard... part Issac Hayes/Barry White orchestral soul, part like something out of the climax to a modern broadway/rock musical... at the time, maybe only the Beatles were flirting with such orchestral complexity... and there's that rap/dialogue with that break beat you've heard before... and the wierd and soulful part disco, part movie soundtrack type ending - - a tune definitely well ahead of its time and classic moment in soul music - - The other tunes I feel, are good, well written, cleanly arranged but at times seem too orchestrated at the expense of that extra edge or drama - - you have the Bar Kays and Memphis Horns, but a lot of times its the Memphis symphony doing what you really would have liked to hear them doing (!) as a result, STORM IN THE SUMMERTIME, HUMAN, and AIRPLAN TICKET, BUS RIDE are definitely great compositions... but never quite reach the stature of say an Otis Redding or Tower of Power ballad (SO VERY HARD TO GO !)
If you like this album... the concept of mixing music with a story line check out Lightening Rod's Hustler's Convention. A group called The L.T.G. Exchange also did something similar, but I forget the name of that album... it was pretty funky !

Mr. Porter's music is outstanding. He not only sings but write as well. David Porter is still well beyond my expectations after all these years. I was first introduce to his magical songs by my brother. Hang On Sloopy still flows through my mind even though I heard it over 25 years ago. My brother had all three of David Porter's albums. Unfortunately time, people and age has done them in, and I'm sorry to say that to date no copies of "Gritty, Groovy and Gettin It" or "Into the Real Thing" are available. Therefore, I as well as many other of his fans will be denied the pleasure of hearing his other treasured songs, such as "It's Over (The Masquerade)," "I Can't See You When I Want To," "Hand On Sloopy" et.al. And this my friends is a crime.

I first heard this album in 1971. I used exerts from the album in my book, Pain Merchants. I didn't think that I would ever hear it again. It seemed to me that the only people who had heard of the artist of the album were the ones in my barrack. I was happy to find that it was available as a CD.

David Porter was an artist who came along in the 60's to early 70's with a style of music that captured those who had the chance to hear his heart-felt songs.Issacc Hayes and Barry White can only compare! The song "Can't See You When I want To",was one that took you by storm.I'm sure many remember being with that special someone in a special place hearing it for the first time.If only his music could be found and put back on the market. It should not have to be extinct from the listening pleasure of thousands who do remember David Porter!!!

This is a good album, not to the level of "Gritty Groovy and Gettin' It" or "Into A Real Thing", but if you are a fan of D.P. you need to have this in your collection. I have these two on wax and would love to have them reissued and add to my cd collection.

There are a couple or real gems here that I love to listen to.
