This CD features a generous selection of songs but the phrase "greatest hits" is misleading; these are not Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys' original Capitol, Starday, Columbia, and Epic recordings. These CMH recordings date from the late 1970s and/or early 1980s. That's not to say they are bad, but it can be argued that the remakes here are inferior to Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys' recordings of the 1950s and 1960s.

When John Prine wrote "Paradise" he had the echos of Jim and Jesse in his head singing it in classic family harmony. Listen to this CD, and walk with your memories down a lane to a better time when brothers sang and rode bicycles, and drove their first compact cars, and Jim and Jesse immortalized the terror of driving one with a "Diesel on my Tail." Reverently in homage they harmonize with "Swing Low Sweet Chariot."---When we all sat around on the porch and played our Gibsons, and Martins, and Dobros, this is how we wished we could have ended up sounding like. With family tradgedy close to these brothers, one can feel as well as hear true emotion entwinded in their voices---just buy this CD and listen to REAL brothers singing REAL music, what a treat for your ears. You will play this CD over and over.

Owning many Bear Family sets, I found it troubling that two reviewers claimed these tracks dated from late 70's early 80's. Could Bear Family make such a huge mistake? So I looked on the jimandjesse.com website for info. They state that these are indeed tracks recorded for Capital between 1952 and 1955. So who are you going to believe?

ENCHANTING HARMONY, AWESOME MANDOLIN PLAYING, AND A STRONG 5-STRING! EVERYTHING THAT MAKES BLUEGRASS THE BEST! THIS ALBUM HAS IT ALL AND THEN SOME.
ALL OF THEIR BLUEGRASS ALBUMS ARE FANTASTIC AND THIS IS ANOTHER ONE.
JIM PASSED AWAY ON NEW YEARS EVE 2002 BUT HIS VOICE LIVES ON THROUGH GREAT RECORDINGS LIKE THIS ONE!

Having had the album Jim & Jesse Today! (JJT) on vinyl for most of my life, I wanted to find out what else these guys sang, so I bought this disc. The copyright year for JJT was 1980, & the recordings on this disc were made about the same time. I've never heard the original '50s & '60s recordings of these tunes, so I don't mind as much as do other fans that these recordings are newer.

In addition to covering traditional tunes & the hits of their contemporaries, the McReynolds brothers wrote some songs of their own, including my favorite track from this disc, "Drifting & Dreaming of You." Although Jesse sang lead most of the time, Jim sang a verse or 2 solo on songs like "Drifting...," "Sleepy Eyed John" & "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." I also like "Remember Me (When the Candlelights Are Gleaming)," which was a hit for Willie Nelson.

A 2007 edition of this disc has the original 24 tracks plus 4 more, but all of those 4 are from JJT, which was reissued on CD in 2002. So instead of the 2007 disc, I recommend this one together with JJT.

Despite the cheesy album cover, this is an absolutely superb collection of one of Bluegrass' best duets. Here is the sound of southern-style bluegrass, straight from the rolling hills of the Carolinas and Virginia. These boys had the smoothest blend of voices in bluegrass. While Earl had that signature Banjo sound of Flatt & Scruggs, and Bill Monroe had that "yip & holler", Jim & Jesse were just plain smooth, with nothing but the finest two voices to ever be recorded. There are enough tracks on this CD to keep your foot tapping and a smile on your face for well over an hour, so buy this one.

I have had this cd for a long time and still listen to it all the time. It has some real familiar songs such as "sweet chariot", "midnight train", and Jim and Jesse's personal favorite song to sing, "paradise". You will find yourself humming these catchy melodies on and on after you hear them.
