Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Karl Denson's brand of postbop jazz considers 1960s-era hard bop a mere launch-off. The D Stands for Diesel has the tenor saxophonist fronting a band similar in makeup to the vaunted Greyboy Allstars. Here, Denson also enlists vocalist Andy Bey as a soulful, mellifluous answer to early jazz's shouters. Keyboardist Robert Walter provides pinpoint accuracy when necessary and smudgy Fender Rhodes electric piano when the mood is downright shaking. Denson's got an immensely creative fix on music that addresses the hips and heart, the stuff of dancers on a club floor rather than clubgoers looking across a table of martinis. And he's got the goods on his horn. He blows with a harmonically tight focus one second and a reaching scour the next. D Stands is energetic the way Catalyst once was, with a love for unbridled jams and improvisational creativity atop precise rhythmic footing. --Andrew Bartlett

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely worthwhile album, a lot of fun, August 28, 1998

(REAL NAME)
Karl Denson, tenor sax player for the San Diego-based Greyboy All-Stars, has produced an excellent album, guaranteed to make toes tap at your next house party. To call this acid jazz misses the point somewhat, given the mediocre quality of many performers in that genre. This is groove-oriented jazz, I have no idea why Karl and the rest of his Greyboy band mates aren't signed on Blue Note & making huge waves at jazz festivals all over the world. There are not only some great chops on this album, it's got great compositions and some intricate, complex interplay unheard in trendier groups. This album won't change the world, but it is a heck of a good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect swing, April 3, 2000
If you love jazz that's dripping with groove and soul, this is a classic. Denson's writing skills and the formula of these musicians make this a unique collection of grooves. A record that will never grow old.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Jazz listener...., December 3, 1999
By A Customer
If you really like traditional jazz, this is the CD for you. This guy plays the horn like they did in the old days of jazz, but with the technique of tomorrow.
