This is a luxury-class performance on a bargain label. Kraggerud is one of the hottest of the young generation of Norwegian musicians. He has an inate feel for the folk character of Grieg's music which he combines with incredible musical maturity and understanding, passionate drive, and blazing technique. I was privileged to hear him perform the Op. 8 Sonata live at Grieg's home, Troldhaugen. It was tremendously moving to hear a brilliant performance by a Norwegian virtuoso who was approximately the same age Grieg was when he wrote the sonata. Rarely have I heard a performer exhibit such identification with the composer's intentions. I wrote my doctoral dissertation on a manuscript study of Grieg's sonatas for violin and piano, and Henning Kraggerud understands how to make these underperformed pieces shine with full luster. Keep an eye out for this young performer -- enjoy this album, but don't miss the chance to hear him live if you can.

Grieg's violin sonatas are a wonderful mixture of drama and lyricism. Unfortunately, some musicians ignore the drama (a common problem in Grieg). This results in music that is, while certainly pretty, also boring. There is no risk of that on this particular disc. The twentysomething performers roar through these pieces with energy and dedication. Fortunately, they don't let this get out of hand, and there is still plenty of warmth and charm to be found. The technical aspects are very good- a clear recording with a good balance between the violin and piano. Interestingly, Grieg himself performed these pieces in concert numerous times and was known for a "full speed ahead" approach that probably wasn't far removed from this disc. Enjoy!

Grieg's Violin Sonatas are so good that even people who don't usually like chamber music can enjoy it. My first exposure to the sonatas was the Dumay/Pires recording. I immediately loved these works. I've heard other versions that are way off the mark... good thing I didn't hear them first. This music requires a playfulness and fluidity that a rough-handed Fiddler-on-the-Roof interpretation can't give. Luckily, Kraggerud and Kjekshus understand the music and have contributed this wonderful recording. It's an absolute pleasure to hear.

After purchasing a Grieg cello sonata/quartet disc featuring Truls Mork, and being immensely satisfied with the music, I decided to add the violin sonatas to my collection. Grammophone gave this Naxos release an enthusiastic review but had another first choice. The Penguin Guide recommended several other versions as well; nevertheless, I selected this disc based on the Amazon reviewers' comments and am glad I did.

First of all, the music, which I was unfamiliar with, is wonderful. Each sonata is a minor masterpiece, full of melodic invention but with plenty of substance. Each of the sonatas represents a different phase in Grieg's career, with each bearing the distinctive mark of the composer's personality.

Since I haven't listened to other recordings of these works, I can't offer any comparative comments; however, Karggerud and Kjekshus play with an intensity, verve and joy that's infectious. I understand from the other reviews that these artists were in their twenties when they recorded this disc, but they play with sophistication, polish and maturity. There's no showing off, just great playing from both.

Highly recommended!

It seems to come as a surprise to me every time I listen to the three Grieg violin sonatas how fine pieces these really are. The first is a rather early work and surprisingly well written for the instrument, considering that Grieg had little experience in writing for violins at the time - and also considering the well-known fact that Grieg never felt at home writing large-scale works. It may not be a masterpiece, but enjoyable and with an individual voice. The second has strong folk music influences, and is rich and sparkling. The third sonata is from later in Grieg's career and is darker and more concentrated. They are really excellent works which I urge anyone to hear. And if you do, you will hardly fine better performances than these: deeply committed and full of life, and both performers responds to every feature of Grieg's writing as if they were born to do so. Sound is excellent as well. Strongly recommended.
