By Mike Tarrani HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on June 11, 2012
Format: MP3 Music
First, the reason for only four stars is there appears to be a flaw in the first track (Sweet Georgia Brown), that only lasts a few seconds, but definitely shows someone missed it when mastering this album. Other than that, the sound is good and the music exceptional.

The first half of the tracklist (1 through 6) are live from her 63 European touring, including Stockholm, Sweden in June 25, 1963. You can actually watch Anita from that era on Jazz Icons: Anita O'Day Live in '63 & '70.

All of the remaining tracks are from studio sessions during the same era. Some people have claimed that this is a transitional album because Anita's recorded output dropped for nearly seven years. I do not go with that opinion because when she did resurface there were no dramatic changes in her performances. Indeed, while her recorded output practically went to zero, her live performing schedule was active. If you have (or obtain) the DVD I mentioned above you will notice that the two performances captured on video show pretty much the same style and energy, even though they were shot seven years apart. More importantly, even if you go back a mere two years to Waiter Make Mine Blues, she sounded pretty much the way she does on this album as well as in 1970. Of course, this is all subjective and the opinion of an aging, near senile fan: me.

There are a number of pianists and bassists on this album, but the one constant is John Poole on drums.

Mike Tarrani 's review is dead-on, of course.

O'Day quit Verve in a boozy huff in 1963 because Norman Granz, since then canonized by the jazz critic fraternity, could not put up with an ignorant, foul-mouthed junkie who pissed on him but nevertheless had genuine grievances: his favoritism toward Fitzgerald and especially his repeated snubs of O'Day in his 'Jazz at the Philharmonic' series - despite her 1961 appearance on the bill with Satchmo at Madison Square Garden. (Wasn't she trying to behave?) Well mannered canaries like June Christy hated O'Day and could not understand why God gave her such genius (reference: Salieri in 'Amadeus'). It's not fair, is it? Of course not.

Without a doubt, she was a foul-mouth bitch - but damn! When she sang, such beauty made the angels weep!

There are a lot of junk CDs and MP3 albums out there in 2014. This is one of the good ones, preserving in a third-generation reissue virtually the only digital issue available of one of her self-published vinyl LPs from that long lonely decade when she kicked smack and was mooching places to live off friends and fans. Highly highly recommended!
