The liner notes emphasize that, indeed, the music of one's homeland does not necessarily flow in one's veins. While Austrian by birth, it took von Karajan some time to develop a feel for the Strauss family idiom; indeed, the notes say that his earlier attempts (in the late 1940's) produced recordings that were panned as overly-serious and stiff.
Never having heard any of those older discs, I can't give a before and after assessment of von Karajan's interpretations. This recording, nonetheless, is quite good. There's dash and volume where appropriate, as well as a melancholy undercurrent where that belongs as well. So, you have a conductor who's finally hit his stride with this type of music, and playing a few lesser-heard pieces as well. Go for it, Strauss fans.

Herbert von Karajan was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, but -- great though he was -- I often preferred other conductors in much of his repertoire. But where music of the Strauss family was concerned Karajan was without peer. Willi Boskovsky was very good in this repertoire, but Karajan was the greatest. And on this CD Karajan conducts the great Berlin Philharmonic orchestra which, under Karajan's direction, plays this music superbly -- as if from Vienna. Two special treats on this CD are (1) the inclusion of the truly great waltz, Music of the Spheres, the greatest waltz by Josef Strauss, the very talented younger brother of Johann Strauss II and (2) the use of a zither in the introduction to Tales from the Vienna Woods waltz by Johann Strauss II. An outstanding CD.

This is something of a "Best of release" (perhaps wisely avoiding the ubiquitous Radetzky march and Blue Danube), but I can hardly imagine anyone listening to these gorgeous accounts will fail to be convinced that at least some of these works, although light, are anything less than masterpieces. Karajan was associated with the Wiener Strausses just as much as with Richard Strauss throughout his career (he made his first Johann Strauss recordings in 1940-41), and part of the virtue of his approach is exactly that he treats this music with no less respect and seriousness than more ambitious symphonic music of the Wiener Strausses' namesake. There is thus nothing vulgar or banal about these interpretations, just wonderfully shaped and paced (with just the merest hint of rubato) interpretations, superbly played and sporting some truly gorgeous textures and almost dreamlike, spirited shaping of the melodies. Well, perhaps there is more warmth and dignity here than boisterousness, but at least in Karajan's hands that sounds exactly right - these waltzes, marches and polkas come across, rightly in my view, more small tone poems than anything else (obviously so in Josef Strauss' Sphärenklange). Polished, beautiful and spirited playing, then, in warm and detailed recorded sound; so even if you think the Strauss waltzes aren't your cup of tea, I strongly recommend acquiring this disc.
