and late Schubert sonatas. Regarding the dating of piano sonatas, his maturity arrived later than with lieder. The sonatas D664 and D784 sound more advanced and attractive than the admittedly enjoyable early sonatas in Klien's
Volume I: D566 and 575. D566 is a short two movement work: Moderato and Allegretto (7:02 and 8:25), while D575,
a four movement work, takes nearly 25 minutes. It had been recorded by Kempff, Richter, Haebler and Brendel. It is quite
lyrical and sweet but sometimes edgy. As with the later works in the 2-fer, I find it played ideally by Walter Klien.
The acoustic is boxy/claustrophobic rather than reverberant/spacious. I prefer the boxy acoustic here and in general.
Klien also employs/produces a thoroughly beautiful tone which can be both soft and lyrical (as in most of D575) or harder and tougher as in most of D845-try the end of the first movement, for example. The former lyrical mode appears
in the great G Major sonata D895 (Richter's favorite Schubert sonata). The C minor sonata D958 is also quite
dark and stormy, a deeply dark and tragic work and the first of the final three sonatas. As with D845, Klien conveys
this content thoroughly and is by no means inferior to other Schubert pianists (including those mentoned above, I think.

Franz Schubert's Piano Sonatas have had the great misfortune of being written about the same time as Beethoven's sonatas. Beethoven's are the ne plus ultra of the piano sonata and are justly esteemed by music lovers everywhere. Schubert's sonatas while lacking Beethoven's ruthless logic and frequent virtuosity are, if anything, more beautiful. They unfold at a serene and visionary pace. Walter Klien does a fine job here and this is one of only two complete sets of the Schubert sonatas available (The remaining sonatas are available in the VOX volumes 2 & 3). I prefer Alfred Brendel in this literature, but he has not recorded the complete set. If you like Schubert, then you will not be unhappy with these performances.

I heard Walter Klien (pronounced Kleen) play and met him after the performance at Valparaiso University, Indiana in the late 1970's. He was a very humble and quiet man. His interpretations of Schubert's music is sensitive, beautifully poetic, buoyantly ambulant, and has an underlying strength with all the drama and passion I would have expected. The recorded quality is very good. There is a lack of reverberation which makes it sound like it was recorded in a small hall or studio which it was, but the piano sound is very good. The recording dates from 1971 to 1973 and the analogue master tapes were transferred to 20-bit digital. I highly recommend this and all his Schubert (and Mozart) recordings. 4-9/16 stars which averages to 5 stars.

Walter Klein delivers beautiful renditions of the Schubert sonatas in this set of CD's. So much fine music for a real bargain price.

Although there may be better individual performances, for a coherent view of Schubert's piano sonatas, Klien is hard to beat, even though I would love to have a pianoforte set of the sonatas by Andreas Staier or Ronald Brautigam. These recordings were made between 1971 and 1973 from the original analogue tapes, which might explain the one reviewer's complaint about the dryness of the sound but has nothing to do with fine performances.
One needs to maintain a sense of perspective when listening to recorded music. As one who started in the late 40's listening to classical music on 78s and then moved on to LPs (and I have heard LPs that sounded worse than many 78s), CDs and now SACDs, one has to overlook the mechanical elements and get to the heart of the matter--the music and the artistry of the performer.
