I generally don't like these samplers or introductions to classical masters. This disc is a good example of why. It is laden with excerpts of longer, more complete compositions which, to be rightly appreciated, should be heard completely, in context. This one is particularly offensive because it consists of selections of which any normal classics fan would own three or more renditions in his collection. Furthermore, each of the pieces is played by a nondescript group of musicians who sound like they are just going through the motions to pick up another paycheck. If you would really like to get your young son or daughter or any beginner into classical music or LVB in particular, may I suggest "Greatest Hits - Beethoven," Sony MLK 64052. It consists of most of the same selections but features the likes of Leonard Bernstein and other greats, and the musicians play like they are loving it and want you to do so too.

This CD is a good introduction to Beethoven, but the cheaper price also reflects a somewhat poor sound quality. While the more bold pieces like the 5th Symphony sound wonderful, the quieter "Moonlight" sonata and "Fur Elise" are extremely soft and you can almost hear the musician breathing. This is a problem on many other CD's, also, so if you're not picky about sound quality the fantastic price shouldn't stop you.

Ten of Beethoven's most famous pieces were selected for this CD. Out of these ten, my favorite is "Symphony No. 5:Allegro con brio," which was made popular during World War II for the likeness between the symphony's opening bars and Morse code for "victory." Obviously, the geniuses who decided to use it as an inspiration for victory forgot it was composed by a German. Considered to be the best composer of his time, Beethoven wrote symphonies and sonatas, conciertos and trios, that expressed the emerging spirit of humanism in German literature. His "Symphony No. 9" combines a poem by Schiller, a contemporary of Goethe, and powerful music to express the never ending battle between good and evil. This is my favorite of Beethoven's nine symphonies, but was not included o the CD, a great oversight in my opinion. However, the selections were well chosen in the sense that they expose the listener to the different types of music Beethoven composed and have made me a grater fan of classical music before I heard this CD.
