I love this album. Her singing is earthy, assured and powerful. Her phrasing makes each song uniquely her own. If you like Dinah Washington or Billie Holliday you owe it to yourself to listen to this album

I just bought this album yesterday, and I am now playing it for the third time. It is splendid. Phillips' style is very similar to Dinah Washington -- which means deep southern black blues singing. What is amazing about the album is that it was made in 1976, but it has the same "classic" sound as 40s/50s blues.

This is an underrated classic by an underrated, overlooked singer. Esther Phillips (aka "Little Esther") got an early start as a child singer who was barely out of her teens when she first hit it big in the mid-1950's. Esther somehow never got the "Big Break" she deserved and was looking for. Her powerful, soulful phrasing will hit you like a ton of bricks just in the first few chords and will remind you of her Dinah Washington-like influence. The same clipped phrasing and soulful delivery is uncanny in its ability to evoke the also-great Dinah Washington, who unlike Esther Phillips, DID hit it big in her time.

"Confessin the Blues" is a must for any jazz/blues fan. If you like Dinah Washington and good-to-honest pure jazz singing, this is for you. "Confessin" is actually a mish-mash of two separate recording dates put together by Atlantic Records. One session consists of a swinging band behind Esther, and the other (my preferred session), is a compilation of a "live" session with an audience. The live session will make you feel as though you're in the front row at the Blue Note or any similar jazz nightclub and that intimate late night feel. You can actually feel and smell the cigarette lingering in the air. Esther is more relaxed in the live session and she is accompanied by only a jazz trio of piano, bass, and drums.

The song selection is flawless and gives Esther plenty of room to stretch her powerful vocals. Listening to this wonderful recording, you can't help but wonder why Esther didn't hit it big in her lifetime compared to the likes of Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald?

The first time I heard this CD I was hooked on Esther Phillips because of her amazing soulful voice and her light vibratto who really makes an unique sound and style. Every blues lover should have this disck in their collection..

I have owned this album for more 30 years and it always gives me a thrill to hear it. In fact, it is in my car's CD player right now.

When I first bought it, I was not sure how old it was. It just had that classic sound of bigband sultry sassiness, with jazzy horns and drums. And, of course, Phillips' amazingly assured vocal phrasing. She was a master. I was amazed a few years later to realize that it had actually come out shortly before I had bought it.

It continues to be one of the most prized albums in my whole collection, and I love turning others on to it.
