Finally something that truly rocks for jaded intllectuals with wierd senses of humour, and an appetite for deconstruction. The lyrics are very original, and hilarious, and music rocks at least as hard as their Rednecky Texas Bretheren, Pantera. If you actually have half a brain in your head, but still like to bang it, buy this! NOW!

Transnational Speedway League is the debut studio album by the mega powerful Stoner Rock band Clutch. This album, along with their next self titled album, are my absolute favorites. This album was released in 1993, shortly after the band released a couple of amazing EP's. If you enjoy the sound that Clutch has on this album, I would highly recommend checking out their Passive Restraints and Pitchfork EP's. They sound almost exactly like this album. They also have a third EP that was recorded around the same time but not released until 97, called Impetus. Check them all out if you want to have your mind blown with heaviness.

Fans of the later and bluesier albums such as From Beale Street to Oblivion and Robot Hive/Exodus, may have a harder time getting into the sound of this one. This albums sounds nothing like any other Clutch record. The vocals are much harsher, and the album sounds more punk and sludge oriented music wise. TSP is easily the rawest and heaviest of any Clutch album, and I absolutely love the in your face style they use on this one. I actually wish they had continued this style for a little longer.

I think this album also has some of the best lyrics of any Clutch album. Songs like the opener A Shogun Named Marcus and my personal favorite Walking In The Great Shining Path Of Monster Trucks, will have you laughing when you hear the words Neil shouts. Some of my favorites include the two previously mentioned, as well as El Jefe Speaks, Binge and Purge, 12 Ounce Epilogue, Earthworm, Heirloom 13, and the crushing sludge of the closer, Effigy. Every track is golden, and Clutch never lets off the gas pedal from start to finish.

On this debut album, Clutch play Pantera-style power-groove metal with growled vocals. Leadoff track, "A Shogun Named Marcus" is a kickass, propulsive groove, rocking harder than this band ever would again. "Binge and Purge" is also cool, with a mosh-crazy ending that seemingly pokes fun at the macho aggressiveness of this style. Elements of funk are scattered throughout this otherwise pounding mosh album. The lyrics are pretty humorous, engaging in storytelling as opposed to the angst of most other similar bands.

I just wrote a review of Clutch's new album Earth Rocker, and lamented how Clutch had basically become a jam-oriented hard rock band. Their last six albums have had the same sound and feel, and I feel like one or two would have been plenty but six just makes my eyes glaze over.

In the process of wondering if my original love of Clutch was simply waning I went back to their self-titled album and Elephant Rider, and realized that no, those two albums are still amazing, it's just the hard-rock direction they took that I am tired of. That led me to realize I never owned their debut album reviewed here, so I went ahead and got it, and now I am kicking myself for having waited so long. Why the hell didn't I get this album until now? No idea...

This album is amazing. It is harder and more aggressive than even their self-titled sophomore album, but every bit as bouncy and fun as any Clutch album. I feel like Clutch was destined to play music like this, and I hope they eventually find their way back to it.

Clutch Rules and this CD clearly illustrates they were poised for greatness and got better with every album.

Shogun Named Marcus is an excellent introduction to Neil's wit and driving vocals.

When writing reviews, I usually try to describe the band by how they sound like other bands in order to give people a sense of what they are in for. With Clutch, it is almost impossible to do without screwing it up. They are a true original hard rock band with a sound that has morphed from the more raw, aggressive side to the smoother, groovier side. With this release you get the aggression and blood-pumping, almost metal, Sabbathy riffs. This was my introduction to the band and is still my preferred incarnation of Clutch (being a metal fan), but everything they release is golden. The vocals are shouted, the lyrics are quirky and fun and this CD is just all killer and no filler.

Favorite Tracks: El Jefe, Binge and Purge

Tough to describe, this album will probably be remembered as a post-punk classic. Heavy and groovy all at once with powerful (singing?) that swings between abstract insanity and deep metaphores and symbolysm within a span of a four note riff. This album is certainly much rougher and faster than their last two efforts which will scare off many. But give this one a chance and let it pull you in...

This is actually my least favorite Clutch album, but still a good effort, and the album that paved the way for Clutch to become what they are today. Great!
There are some really good songs on the album. My personal favorite is "Milk of Human Kindness", which is just awesome. That song was actually used for their music video debut. I remember seeing it on MTV back when videos were still MTV's bread and butter (it a either on headbangers ball, 120 minutes, or both).

Anyway, a worthy addition to any Clutch collection.
