My own personal favorite here is "White Ginger Blossoms," where Alfred Apaka's voice is perfectly phrased and a precise, deft, delicate touch. Some of the faster party music on the record is pretty kitschy, but especially in the slower tunes this is some of the very best Hawaiian vocal music out there. Overall, this record is a real trip down memory lane and a great pleasure.

This is the third time that I have bought this CD, Hawaiian Favorites, by Alfred Apaka. One for my Mom, Grandma and me. We used to live in Hawaii when these songs were relatively new, so it brings back great memories! This seller is wonderful. They shipped the CD directly to Grandma and made her day. This compilation had some releases of songs I thought I already had in my Apaka collection. I was wrong! They are nice, simpler arrangements of other Alfred Apaka material that hitherto I have not heard from the Decca library. Very nice and pleasing album all around, obviously taken from a phonograph remaster because of the tape hiss heard on the CD. Let me expound on that point...the remastering is pretty clean, you can hear the tape master noise, which I prefer over heavily filtered, noiseless, artificially processed analog audio. At least I'm hearing most of what was captured on master tape, on the CD. It's not a bad hiss, but just knowing it's there assures me the fidelity hasn't been blasted out of the water for the sake of removing the noise. Over-used noise reduction ruins the nuiances of any analog recording. The engineers left this one alone. Apaka and the arrangements shine through as intended. I only wish I had my entire Apaka collection resampled at 22 bit, 62kHz just so every sound is heard up to the tape bias frequency (30kHz). I know most people can't hear beyond 15kHz or so, but my hearing is exceptional, has been for decades, and I miss the sounds beyond that range not present in many digital recordings. In this way, the LPs are superior.

In 1954 Alfred Apaka recorded the original 10" LP of "Hawaiian Favorites," which contained 8 tracks. A later 12" LP reissue added four more tracks - and fake echo. That is the tape that MCA/Universal used for this CD reissue, as opposed to the master tapes, which for all I know have been lost in the Universal vault fire of a few years ago. At any rate, Apaka's gorgeous voice shines through the echo and if you want to hear Hawaiian standards sung to perfection, this should be on your short list.

Our 50th state has produced countless artists hilighting the authentic island music. Along came Alfred Apaka with a resonant baritone voice that was equally successful with Hawaiian standards as well as Mainland melodies. His career was just flying high when he was felled by a heart attack at the age of 41. This album demonstrates the vocal skills that enchanted millions before his untimely demise.
