This is almost the identical review I wrote for the original 1996 release of these performances. In the 2009 release, the original release's hard sound of the piano's treble has been tamed with a slight loss of brilliance. This one is much improved in my opinion and now represents the finest account of the Chopin Preludes available.

Frederic Chopin modeled his 24 Preludes after Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. Before a concert, Chopin would seclude himself with a piano and play through the WTC for memory. Like Bach, Chopin wrote a Prelude in each major and minor key. Each one is a masterpiece with each its own prevailing mood. In the present album, Ivan Moravec performs the set of Preludes and the Ballade No. 4 on the Supraphon label, recorded in 1963.

In Moravec's hands, the Preludes take on new lives. He plays them with a fresh approach. When you listen to them, you can hear him feeling his way through each of them. Take No. 6 in B minor, for example. If No. 15 is the "Raindrop Prelude," then No. 6 should be the Teardrop Prelude. Its sublime melancholic melody is unparalleled in the piano literature. In contrast, No. 7 in A major is a sweet but brief smile played. No. 9 in E major is performed with serious majesty, but I wish it was less disjointed and more flowing. Moravec demonstrates his superb technique and light touch with No. 10. Unlike the interruptions of No. 9, the Prelude in G-sharp minor which can sound disjointed is flowing. Odd. No. 15 in D-flat major receives the finest performance I have heard. The emotion flows throughout but it never becomes thick and overly dramatic. I have always loved this Prelude, and Moravec more than any pianist conveys perfectly its exquisite and anguished feeling state. No. 20 in C minor was played at Chopin's funeral.

This disc combines the 1976 recording of the Preludes with the 1963 recording of the 4th Ballade. Both recording dates have produced a fine piano sound that will give great pleasure and which is very well matched.

Moravec has a small discography and much of it features the works of Chopin for which he has a tremendous reputation. Descriptions of his playing contain such words as 'searching' (Joan Chissell in The London Times) and phrases such as 'Not since Alfred Cortot ...... has there been a Chopin player of comparable elegance.' (Scott Cantrell) and these ideas are appropriate when considering how to describe the current disc.

Moravec has a playing style that combines an unusual degree of gentleness with climaxes of great passion. This is based on a technique in which he makes constant use of an astonishing and subtle range of touch and of rubato underpinned by a tight control of rhythm which combine to create an impression of interpretive strength and flexibility all delivered with a suggestion of improvisation.

To go through these 24 Preludes searching for meaningful examples from such fleeting pieces of inspiration, both of Chopin and Moravec, would seem to be like trying to offer images of the wind. No-one can doubt its presence but only its effect can be easily shown. So it is with Moravec. The fourth Ballade is a masterly creation and receives a masterly rendition of great emotional and technical breadth. There are a number of recordings of this work by Moravec, all slightly different but all completely mesmerising and clearly of unusual vision. This, in the context of the series of Preludes, could almost be seen as a wonderful encore and fabulously satisfying gift.
