Great player, stellar sidemen, great tunes!

Where did this guy come from, and where did he go? He had to be "somebody" in the jazz world just to rate the session players accompanying him, but who is Dempsey Wright?

My suspicions are that, unless the man died or became ill, he likely gave-up on jazz as many others have before and since. It's extremely tough to make a living at, unless you're Miles or Chick, so wouldn't it be a shame if the guy had to sell insurance or used cars instead of playing his sublime music!

Regardless, enjoy this one-hit wonder (sic) for what it is: a prime example of late-'50's/early-'60's Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, et al, era jazz guitar at it's finest!

Highly Recommended!

Epilogue - I subsequently found some info on Dempsey Wright on a British jazz guitar site on the net. I understand that there IS another Dempsey Wright recording in existence. It's entitled "String Euphoria" and is dated ca. 1974. I have no other info about this recording, including if he was actually the session leader and doubt it's still in print. Apparently, he did some session work for Harry Babasin (a jazz cellist) and his Jazz Pickers featuring Terry Gibbs (vibes) ca. 1957/58 and for Freddie Gambrell (piano) and Paul Horn (flute) on a recording entitled "The Mikado - A Jazz Interpretation" ca. 1959. Apprently, he moved to Little Rock, AR where he played regular small nightclub gigs there and in Hot Springs, AR until his death ca. 2001.

I stumbled over this album a few years ago and am sorry to see that this is the only album available from Dempsey Wright. I am a huge fan of Jazz Guitar from this era, and this is one of my favorites. Dempsey's style is supurb and his solos are fantastic. I rate this Jazzbo right up ther with Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel and Joe Pass!

Perhaps lesser known, but Dempsey Wright is a good guitarist who plays very relaxed with a nice sound, perfectly matching Richie Kamuca on tenor. Also featured are ben Tucker on bass. You can really hear him! There is also the propelling drumwork of Stan Levey and the vibes of Vic Feldman who plays piano as well. When the last case, you wish to hear him a bit louder, but this can be a matter of taste. A fine cd, not only for guitar lovers. This is also music for Kamuca fans, because he is extensively featured.
