5.0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN JUST GOD STUFF!, December 30, 1999
By Emilio Marianelli (Derry, NH USA) - See all my reviews
I bought this cd because it shows that DC Talk is willing to experiment. There's jazz, rock, r&b, sap, and funk. What more could you ask for? The more amazing thing is that they make it sound good! Plus the fact that they boldly proclaim the name of Jesus Christ doesn't hurt a bit. It's a Christian band with a Christian CD with a Christian label. Does this make sense. It's obviously going to talk about God. One of their best CD's, DC Talk has really topped themselves this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, October 30, 1999
By A Customer
Though their debut album may not be musically as awsome as it is now, this is the classic start from the group that would bring Christian rock into the mainstream light!!! Its somewhat humerous though,in the regards to listening to this album, to think that in a few years these guys would be screaming out songs like "Jesus Freak" and "Supernatural" and make beautiful ballads as "Between You and Me" and "Consume Me! Attention all dcTalk fans!!!!!!!!!!!! BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!! ITS CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars They Had To Start Somewhere., December 2, 2003
By Louie Bourland (Garden Grove CA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
DC Talk's self-titled 1989 debut is a far cry from the driving rock sound that the trio is now known for. DC Talk gained instant attention as being one of Christian music's very first Rap/HipHop groups. At the time this album was released, DC Talk was primarily the brainchild of Toby McKeehan (aka Tobymac) with Kevin Max (then known as Kevin Smith) and Michael Tait contributing mostly background vocals. Toby wrote and arranged all eight tracks on the band's debut album which fits right in with the popular Rap and Hip-Hop acts of the time (MC Hammer, Run-DMC, LL Cool J and Young MC).
Standout tracks include the terrific "Heavenbound", "Final Days" and the powerful praise anthem "Voices Praise Him". The album's closing track "He Loves Me" is in the same vein as LL Cool J's "I Need Love" and features Michael Tait singing the traditional hymn "Jesus Loves Me".
DC Talk have definitely come along away since the release of this debut album. Nearly 15 years later, Toby, Michael and Kevin are now mega-superstars as both a group and as solo artists. The music may have changed but DC Talk's positive Christ-centered message remains as powerful and true as it was during this early period. From here, it only got better.
