Biography

The Verve formed in Wigan, near Manchester, England in 1989, and were signed to Hut Records two years later. With a sound combining psychedelic instruments and shoegaze haziness, their early singles created a little buzz on the indie-rock scene without leading to mainstream success. Debut album A Storm In Heaven only reached No.23 in the UK album charts, but it was widely praised by critics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Single with Great Bonus Tracks, October 22, 2004
By Paul Allaer (Cincinnati) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It's hard to believe that it's been more than 7 years since the Verve hit a (commercial) nerve with the beautiful and haunting single "Bitter Sweet Symphony" of the "Urban Hymns" album, but as the years roll by, their biggest hit stands the test of time.

The US release of the "Bitter Sweet Symphony" single (4 tracks, 21 min.) includes 3 addititional non-album tracks that makes this a perfect combo. "Lord I'll Guess I'll Never Know" is a pensive song. "So Sister" is lead singer Richard Ashcroft's at his achingly best, just a beautiful ballad. But the closer "Echo Bass" is the best of the bonus tracks, an up-tempo song reminiscent of the Stone Roses' "Fool's Gold".

After the "Urban Hymns" album, Richard Ashcroft went solo, and he never reached the high of that album. This single presents the best of the Verve, and of Richard Ashcroft. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy it for Echo Bass, December 22, 2008
The fourth track with its flowing bass and wah guitar are the highlight of this ep. It is worth the price for this single track. the track comes up listed as Bittersweet radio edit in itunes. Wish more like this had been on their most recent release.

4.0 out of 5 stars tight cut, August 29, 2008
Bitter sweet symphony is one of those songs that on a rainy day and it seems nothing is going right this song seems to ease all of that and makes things seem to make some sort of sense. hard to believe this cut is a decade old. it seems just like yesterday. the extra tracks are cool as well."Echo Bass" is Nice of the extra tracks, but Bitter sweet symphony is the cut.
