From start to finish, this album evokes fear. You can hardly understand a word that Quorthon says, but when you do, rest assured it is something unpleasant. Oddly enough, even though this is the second Bathory album, the production is inferior to that of the first. Even more odd is that, unlike a lot of albums in which poor production is irritating (Megadeth's original "Rust in Peace" is a good example), this album's occasional hiss, pop and distortion improves the feel and listening experience of the album overall.

The prologue,"Revelation of Doom," is a 3:27 long mix of scary sound effects that really are scary. If it were played while people were waiting in line to get into a haunted house, a lot of people would probably leave. "Total Destruction," "Born for Burning," Possessed" and the title track are the best ones this album has to offer. These four tracks somehow offer a nearly impossible mix of black metal songs being catchy.

Take your time with this album, if you purchase it. I would not recommend listening to it the first time while driving down the road. Rather, relax in a dimly lit room while staring at the ceiling and ponder life in general as you listen to it. This album, like most quality metal albums, was written by an intellectual for intellectuals. Let the sound envelope you and see what you can learn from it, if you dare.

This is the second effort from these guys, and they really are into therir music, ripping vocals, crushing drums, blasting guitars, although Bathory has morphed though the time, (example Quorthorn solo effort Octagon) they are one of the best bands in their genre. Music not for the weak, if Black metal is your taste, you've better go and get it NOW!!

This album eluded me for a very long time...it's not one of my favorite Bathory albums ever (Blood Fire Death, self-titled, etc.), but is certainly a great album and not one to be missed. Quorthon's growls are inhuman, and the album is filled with some really powerful black metal riffs. The songs aren't quite as easily distinguished as some of his other albums, but there are a few classics like the amazing "Born for Burning" (the opening riff is proof that he was influenced by Venom, sounds like "Don't Burn the Witch" to me!), and the "Return of Darkness and Evil" which is probably the best track on the whole disc.

A really incredible album. Though I had had a history with the Death Metal genre in the past, I had figured that most of it was originally American/English. What I now realize is the titanic, and I mean TITANIC influence Quorthon has had on extreme metal, in Europe, the USA and abroad. This album was ahead of its time and laid the blueprint for what extreme metal would become in terms of black metal, death metal, and other extreme music forms. I especially like the menacing cover. The gurgled vocals and insaneness of the music, pounding drums, severe guitar tone, the feeling of chaos, it's like being in one of HP Lovecraft's abysses.

Along with Celtic Frost and to a lesser extent Venom (more for style than musical substance), Bathory is the band that wrote the blueprint for all subsequent black metal. Its all here: the growling vocals, heavily Satanic lyrics, distorted wash of guitar, the pounding drums both slow and fast, if not blast beat fast, and it was released in 1985. The production isn't great, the playing isn't perfect, so what. The Return rocks. If you like black metal towards the more primal side of things: Darkthrone, Burzum pre Filosofem, older Immortal you'll like this. Bathory are the spring from which flows all modern black metal, true innovators.
