As well as being one of the finest operatic tenors America has produced, Jan Peerce was a peerless interpreter of of traditional Jewish music, from cantorial masterpieces to Yiddish folk songs. This wonderful collection is a mix of old Chassidic melodies and some that are from World War II, telling stories of European Jewry, from the old country, to the new.
The 2 songs that thrill and move me most are "Vu iz Dus Gesele" and "Anniversary Waltz", both of which are also included in a CD put out by Vanguard Classics called "Yiddish Dream, a Heritage of Jewish Song", which I highly recommend as a "must own" for lovers of this genre of music.
Recorded in '63, the wonderful arrangements are by Abraham Ellstein, who also conducted, and the sound quality is good.
The simple foldout insert includes the original LP liner notes, and has, instead of line by line lyrics, the story of the songs explained. The total time is 52:56, and every minute is a joy.

I received this just yesterday and have played and re-played it several times, each time hearing something new.The included description/lyrics to each song help those of us who do not speak Yiddish.
Mr.Peerce once again delivers his usual perfection. I cannot say enough about this man's voice. So powerful. So moving. So heartfelt.
IMHO,Mr.Peerce is the finest tenor who ever sang a note. I love his voice so much.
Regardless of your religious affiliations, this CD is wonderful because it introduces us to ,for me,new songs, stories, feelings. But the voice. The Voice.

I don't speak or understand Yiddish, but what I find so entertaining about it is hearing the German in it. It sounds like a German dialect, really, something like Swizzerdeutsch or Alsatian. And sure enough, it is only recently that it dawned on me that this very word, "Yiddish", was but the yiddish pronunciation of the German word "Jüdish", Jewish.

And famed operatic tenor Jan Peerce, the protégé of Toscanini, born (in the Lower East Side, Manhattan) Joshua Pincus Perelmuth, of Louis and Henya Perelmuth, recent immigrants from the village of Horodetz, then situated in Poland, certainly knew a thing or two about Yiddish. It is said that he chose his stage name, Jan Peerce, rather than the "John Pierce" which his impresario had donned him with, because it better reflected his ethnicity. Another one of his recordings for Vanguard, the label of the Solomon brothers, was "The Art of the Cantor", Art of the Cantor. This recital of Yiddish folk songs was recorded by Vanguard in 1963. As the liner notes (from the original LP) point out, "the songs on this program range in period from the 18th century Chassidic movement to the Second World War. Most of them come from the life of the Eastern Euroepan Jews and Jewish immigrants to America, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries."

They are presented here in orchestral arrangements by "the distinguished composer of opera, operetta and Hebrew liturgical music", Abraham Ellstein, who also conducts the (anonymous) instrumental ensemble.
