This British collection includes the entirety of The Cramps' first release, the Gravest Hits EP, along with selections from Songs the Lord Taught Us, Psychedelic Jungle, and a live version of Smell of Female's "You Got Good Taste" (shortened to "Good Taste"). It covers the years 1979-1983, a formative period in the band's career. Ten tracks can also be found on the domestic comp, Bad Music for Bad People, which was released the following year. Although the bulk of the material consists of covers, you can hardly tell (barring an intimacy with the originals). Once The Cramps get hold of a song, they always make it their own--even the more recognizable numbers like "Surfin' Bird, "Lonesome Town," and "Fever." All benefit from Lux Interior's vocal prowess. He's a proto-punk screamer like Screamin' Jay Hawkins or The Sonics' Gerry Roslie on the rockin' numbers, but can caress a ballad like mid-period Elvis when the need arises. Not one of the songs sounds as if it could've been written anytime after the '60s. Alex Chilton produced the first 10 tracks, The Cramps the remaining seven.

I love this album & wish it was the remixed versions because the songs are a bit thin sounding compared to the beautiful remixes they did to their first album & Psychedelic Jungle. It is still a great collection. A friend had it in college & for some reason I was thinking about it & bought it.

Tha Cramps are the incarnation of early rock's sleaziest impulses. At times the group shows us a punkabilly instrumental attack and at other times sick psychedelia. Nonetheless, they hold a weird fascination for the listener. One has to listen to their version of "SURFIN' BIRD" to believe how wild and crazy they can be. This release has the latter song as well as some early releases such as "HUMAN FLY".To the uninitiated be prepared for some wacky and demented performances.

For any old school Cramps fans, this seventeen track compilation disc is a should-have. When I looked more closely to the track listing, I realized it was a combination of the 'Gravest Hits' five-song EP along with their 'Bad Music For Bad People' lp. Even though all these vintage psycho-billy tunes have indeed been released several times before, 'Off The Bone' is STILL worth owning a copy of. It's always fun to hear "Human Fly", "Surfin' Bird", the awesome "Drug Train", "Go Goo Muck" and "Uranium Rock" as well as the others. Nice mysterious cover. Enjoy.

I can't think of another band quite like the Cramps. They were a fusion of rockabilly, punk, rock and whatever else that came to mind at the time. Totally raw and uninhibited, wild and fun. I feel lucky like that I got to see them in concert once (a show in San Francisco, with the Method Actors opening; great pairing!), and I still crack a big smile when I think about the Cramps live concert clip in the film "Urrgghh: A Music War." What's he doing with that microphone???!!! They were a brilliant band. And oh yeah, this compilation, "Off the Bone." Very good for the most part, but I find myself skipping a few of the weak remakes of songs like "Lonesome Town" and "Fever." Their version of "Surfin' Bird," however, is killer! Many other fun, rockin' tracks on here too, including classics like "Human Fly," Garbageman," Drug Train" and "Goo Goo Muck." But perhaps my favorite track on here is the final one, a live version of "Good Taste." Love that guitar; makes me shake and shimmy every time. I'll say it again: there was no other band like the Cramps. Enjoy this music!

In my opinion, THE one to start with if you're just getting into the cramps. I think that even though its a compilation, it really brings together the psychobilly sound that they are known for. My favorite album by them. DEFINATELY worth getting.

I bought this years ago on Vinyl when i was but a pup. the album cover and the back cover are in 3D which is nice. i can't remember if there were any 3D glasses included but i guess that doesn't matter. my 6 year-old son has recently discovered that if he uses his 3D glasses from Spy Kids 3-D the Off The Bone album cover looks pretty cool too. the CD has two additional tracks, the last two, which is also nice. as mentioned in other reviews, there is no 'new' material on this disc but that doesn't keep it from being a classic Cramps disc. If you can find this on vinyl, you should get it just for the 3D album cover.
