In late 1965, Brian Wilson was preparing material for what would become the PET SOUNDS album. He also released the experimental single "The Little Girl I Once Knew," but Capitol Records demanded a new Beach Boys album for the Christmas buying season. Since Brian was determined not to rush his new album, the group had already released live and Christmas albums the year before, and a best-of collection was ruled out because it would have signaled the end of The Beach Boys' career, it was decided to record a live-in-the-studio album with a party atmosphere (though the music was recorded informally at Western Studios on acoustic instruments, with the "party" sounds overdubbed later). Thus, BEACH BOYS' PARTY was born. It was a Top Ten album in late 1965, produced the hit single "Barbara Ann," and two B-sides: "There's No Other (Like My Baby)" was the B-side of "The Little Girl I Once Knew," and "Devoted To You" was the B-side of the Brother Records single "Gettin' Hungry," which was credited to "Brian and Mike."

The album also includes three Beatle covers - "I Should Have Known Better," "Tell Me Why," and "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," along with a comedy medley of "I Get Around" and "Little Deuce Coupe," and several other classics from the '50s and '60s. It was originally released as a "two-fer" CD (Party / Stack-O-Tracks) in 1990, 1997 (Canadian import), and 2001, and as an individual mono CD in 1994.Read more ›

This album was recorded in three days at Western studio. Mostly recorded live with just Hal Blaine percussion and Dean Torrence occasional vocals added. Party sounds overdubbed by various friends, girlfriends etc in the studio to the completed tapes upon completion of the basic tracks, with soda, beer, and chips for all. An innovative stopgap idea by Brian while he worked on Pet Sounds. Stereo remixing features bass to left, basic group tracks split left/right with artificial double tracking, and party sounds in true stereo. Even better listening experience than my pristine Duophonic vinyl to CD version. Great sound, particularly through headphones. Very entertaining.

Some of this album is pretty good, some of it is awful. Instead of issuing a stereo & mono mix it would have been better if it had an original mix & a mix without the fake party dubbed in. I have a bootleg of the Party album sans fake party noises & the album is MUCH improved. You can actually hear how good their playing was on most tracks, especially the version of Devoted To You. Unless you are a fanatic that has to have everything you could probably give this a miss. You might be better served if you do need this album to find a copy of the Capitol twofer of Party/Stack Of Tracks (the other throw away Beach Boys album). I've seen them for a couple of bucks.

The Beach Boys sound great here, doing their songs plus Beatles, plus Dylan, plus others most likely. If you ever try to record a "party" record make sure anybody clapping along with the song are no where near a microphone. And anyone who wants to clap along has to get 2 other people to clap with them before they can start clapping themselves. The other problem with this atmosphere is it ruins a few poignant moments. But this record does have something no other Beach Boys record has: The Beach Boys jammin'. It's alot of fun in spots.

This album from December 1965 was Digitally Remastered in 2012 in both Mono & Stereo from Capital Records
I listen to it in Mono, the sound clairty of this CD is the best and not one bad song on it. It's a pleasure to hear The Beach
Boys singing Beatle songs. You won't be sorry if you buy The Beach Boys Party. It's a place in time now !!!

Wow what an amazing and unusual album by a great band. I picked up this in bad condition from the corner record store for 2 bucks and it may be the best 2 dollars ive ever spent. Gets you dancin around the room and you dont get sick of beach boys california girls type junk. Love it!

It's easy now to sit back with thirty plus years hindsight and dish-up raves reviews of Beach Boy classics like California Girls, Wouldn't It Be Nice and Good Vibrations. Truth is, the Beach Boys were pretty much a singles act all through the sixties. And no one, with the possible exception of the Beatles did it better. Pet Sounds changed all that, eleavating the BB's to superstar status. The pressures of record company executives to crank out more hits and the inner turmoil Brian Wison experienced, as he fought the demons of his manic depression have been exhustively documented. As they entered into the post-Pet Sounds, psycedellic era the BB's became increassingly challenged to keep pace with both their former success as well as new arrivals onto the music scene. Compitition, not only from the Beatles and the Stones, was fierce. They also squared-off against the likes of the Byrds, the Mamas & Papas, Simon & Garfunkle, etc.
It's at this junction of their recording career that Brian made the unpopular decision to record an unrehearsed, acoustic set of Beatles cover songs, Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changing" and a smathering of oldies, (Alley Oop, Devoted To You, Hully Gully and Mountain of Love). This was a daring approach for a band known for it's air tight harmonies and impecable studio production. The Beach Boy's Party album, which preceeded the MTV "Unplugged" format by some thirty years, yielded one top 40 single, "Barbra Ann" and faired modestly well on the album charts.
Clearly this is not representative of the early output of classic BB albums. However, more than just an oddity or curio, "Party" represents an interesting transition in the astonishing career of a legendary rock n' roll band and should not be overlooked or dismissed as contractual "filler" for the greedy execs at Capital Records.

I haven't listened to this album since the '60's. Very enjoyable. Brought back a lot of memories. Take it for what it is. A fun, laid back album !

The stereo mix (1st time ever released--ever ) is a bliss. The og mono mix doesn't translate to this album. You need the true stereo to fell like you are in the room.
