The only previous exposure I've had to Jongen was through a rather

bombastic Symphonie-Concertante for organ and orchestra and some

pleasant, if rather insipid music for flute and piano. His piano

music however, is altogether of a higher quality and well worth a

listen.

This CD is not "new" , just new to me and was recorded in the early 90's. 72 minutes of music is

offered and one wishes it would never end. I also had never heard of

Gary Stegall, but he emerges as one of the most colorful, sensitive

pianists I've ever experienced, like Gieseking with more solid finger

technique.

The opening piece, Clair de Lune, is not at all like Debussy's work

of the same name. The first 4 minutes sound a bit like Ravel's Le

Gibet with a luscious melody in the treble. After that point a

sensuous climax takes one's breath away in its pure beauty. Even my

father, who suffers from Alzheimers', liked this piece and he

responds to very little these days.

Stegall follows Clair de Lune with Soleil A Midi, an ebullient, happy

work which sounds like a killer to play. It is somewhat like

Debussy's Danse on steroids, and has few moments of repose. Stegall

plays the spots off of this virtuosic work, and his performance is

unlikely to be bettered anytime soon.

Next is Sarabande Triste. Here, we are in the same sound world of

the Ravel Pavane, but with even more poignancy. The first time I

heard this, I had to pull my car over to the side of the road so I

could more fully concentrate on it.

One may feel some reluctance when faced with a disc containing unfamiliar repertoire performed by a pianist one has not previously heard about and issued by a label one has not heard about either. I still sometimes take my chances, and discs such as this one constitute the reason I continue to do so. This is an exceptionally rewarding release; wonderful performances of marvelous music in good, warm, very ambient sound. In fact, calling the music "marvelous" may be an understatement; this selection of piano music by Joseph Jongen gives us several works that qualify for the epithet "masterpiece", worthy of comparison with, say, Debussy. Jongen's style is generally impressionist, though the sentiment is more romantic and often warmer than that of the slightly older French master (indeed, the idiom does perhaps owe more than a little to Fauré as well).

The music was written between 1908 and 1922. The Two Pieces (comprising the wonderfully atmospheric, somewhat Ravelian Clair de Lune and the delightfully ebullient Soleil a Midi) from 1908 remain among the composer's most popular works, and they are indeed substantial masterpieces that deserve to be heard much more often in the concert hall. They are here followed by the - unusually for the composer - heart-on-sleeve, passionate Sarabande Triste (1918), presumably written as a response to the Great War. The seven preludes (selected from a group of 13) from 1922 are wonderfully variegated and spirited, clearly modeled on Debussy's preludes, but offering a deeply personal, attractive and warm take on impressionism.

The main bulk of the disc, however, is given over to the Suite En Forme De Sonate op. 60 (1918), a large-scale work in four movements lasting for a total of 31 minutes.

I recently ordered this CD, trusting both the laudatory comments already made about it and a brief extract (from the recorded pieces) I had found on the Internet. And the least I can say is that I don't regret my purchase. This CD is a little gem, not to be missed.

Jongen's piano music takes you out-of-this-world. Stunning and impressionistic. A sheer delight! Gary Stegall conveys his deep understanding of it wonderfully.
