Biography

dc Talk is a Christian rock band, formed in Lynchburg, Virginia in the late 80s by Toby McKeehan, Kevin Max Smith and Michael Tait. Their first two albums were hip-hop, but they had more success when they introduced pop themes into the third, Free at Last. The album took the band to platinum sales and earned them the Grammy for the Best Rock Gospel Album.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

How did DC Talk follow up their epic Jesus Freak? Very carefully, if Supernatural is any indication. Where Jesus Freak broke through musical barriers in a genre known for playing it safe, Supernatural builds on the band's momentum with a familiar blend of power pop, beautiful ballads, and power-chord rockers. The opening "It's Killing Me" lays down a riveting foundation, while Toby McKeehan has never sounded more like Seal than on the soft ballads "Consume Me" and "Godsend." But McKeehan (who coproduces) also turns it around by belting out the R&B-tinged "Wanna Be Loved." Not to be outdone, Michael Tait, Kevin Max, and McKeehan team up wonderfully on the radio-ready "Into Jesus." Once again, producer Mark Heimermann blends fascinating vocal arrangements into DC Talk's magical wall of sound. --Michael Lyttle

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Jesus Freak, February 21, 2000
This review is from: Supernatural (Audio CD)
This album is awesome, better than even their classic Jesus Freak album. (However, their version of Charlie Peacock's In The Light is still their best song, in my opinion.)

In spite of what some may say, the gospel is not the least bit toned down on this record. Just listen to Consume Me, Red Letters, and Into Jesus. Most other songs are just as obviously Christian if one takes the time to understand the lyrics.

As for the people talking about the song "Consume Me" being Satanic...please, think before you write something so moronic. (Read "A Music Fan from USA"'s review. He'll set you right.) Plus, it would be totally inconsistent with the rest of everything DC Talk is. Your witch hunts are a waste of time and don't help the gospel. No "satanic" album could ever be such an encourager to my faith as this has.

Buy this album. It's on par with the greatest Christian albums out there, up there with the Exodus CD, Caedmon Call's S/T album, Third Day's S/T album, and Fred Hammond's Pages of Life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Great Lyrics, January 14, 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Supernatural (Audio CD)
Supernatural is another great CD by DC Talk. As usual, they have combined superb vocals, great instrumentals, and positive, Christian lyrics.

This CD includes several different genres. Very few groups could pull off such a diverse mix and still have such a fantastic sound. The lyrics are always uplifting and expressely Christian.

There are no bad songs in this collection. There are some that are terrific. I particularly like 'Dive', 'Consume Me', 'Into Jesus', and 'Red Letters'.

If you are not familiar with DC Talk, do yourself a favor and try them. If you are already a fan, but don't have this CD, you will want to get it. 'Supernatural' is another great album to add to any collection. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Have A Supernatural Experience, February 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Supernatural (Audio CD)
This is a CD that has it all, from smooth, radio-friendly songs like "Consume Me" and "Into Jesus" to infectious, highly-energized tracks like "Supernatural" and "My Friend (So Long)". For the romantics out there, there's even a sweet love song ("Godsend") mixed in. This album is marked with passionate vocals and killer hooks that only a person without a pulse could not dance or sing along to. The three members of DC Talk helped write every song, so even with the disparity in musical style from tune to tune, the album still has a way of continuously flowing from beginning to end. It also manages to clearly define DC Talk's faith and joy in Christ without resorting to being preachy. Though no one song quite compares to "Jesus Freak", from their last album, "Supernatural" comes very close and the other 11 tracks are all intensely listenable. DCT somehow continues to improve with each new album, and this is their most satisfying one yet. Mainstream audiences don't know what they are missing.
