This well recorded disc from 1977 received glowing reviews when it first appeared. Listening to it over the years since then it has never failed to thrill and to satisfy. Those are key descriptors as frequently we hear discs that satisfy but the idea of a disc that thrills is a rarer experience and one that might run counter to current intentions.

Taking the solo works to start with, one becomes aware that this is playing conceived on a much broader emotional canvas than is fashionable nowadays. There are constant tiny fluctuations in tempo which are used to heighten excitement or relaxation. Equally there are wide ranges of touch. Essentially this is warm-blooded and somewhat romantic school whereas players like Thibaudet, Osborne and even the much liked Bavouzet provide a cooler response to the music. In Gavrilov's hands the first movement climax is powerfully built with real drama, the second movement mimics the tiny fluctuations of the changing wind speeds and the third movement is simply a thrilling vision of Scarbo. The Pavane is also more forthright and expressive than is often the case nowadays.

The concerto performance is alive to all the jazz inflections and is, once more, an exciting performance. In this he is ably supported by Rattle who clearly shows his empathy for the swung element of the concerto. Not all is like this of course and Gavrilov is equally able to express the other aspects of this fascinating score.

This disc has long been deleted and copies are not so easy to find. Nevertheless, collectors interested in fine alternative performances of distinction may well find this a very rewarding disc to purchase.

While there is strong competition from Argerich, Fleischer, Zimmerman - and more recently, Bavouzet, this performance is still, for me, the most dazzling of all recordings of the Ravel Left hand concerto. Originally coupled with an equally brilliant performance of the Prokofiev 1st Concerto (still available, coupled with a slightly less memorable Tchaikovsky 1st) it is also notable for its exceptionally full and brilliant recording.

In Gaspard De la Nuit Gavrilov gives another performance mixing brilliant fingerwork with poetry.
