5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Bitterness at it's Best, February 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Jewel (Audio CD)
I have kept up with the likes of Marcella Detroit since I first heard her celestial voice melt with that of Siobhan Fahey's as Shakespear's Sister. She gets better with every note and deeper with every word. Songs to live by - definitely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give a little bit of love and you get it back, May 20, 2002
This review is from: Jewel (Audio CD)
"I believe" that this woman is talented.
"I believe" is the best song on this album,
also released as a single which was a good
decision because it's a well- made song
for peace with a great refrain. The album
is a nice popsong- collection which shows
that Marcella is able to go her own way
after Shakespears Sister. "Jewel", "Art of
melancholy", "I'm no angel", "You don't tell
me everything", "Out of my mind" and "Prima
Donna" are other highlights that point out
Marcellas great voice and her musical talent.
"Ain't nothing like the real thing" is a duet
with Elton John. Although I miss Marcella in
combination with Siobhan I respect her solo-work!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unfullfiled promise from a great talent, August 31, 2001
By Sasha "lampic" (at sea...sailing somewhere) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Jewel (Audio CD)
I still haven't met anyone who ever heard about Marcella Detroit except myself - what a brilliant voice/talent - I still remember hearing this album the first time around in 1994. and thinking that I expected just a little bit more.Considering her Eric Clapton/"Shakespeare's Sister" past I assumed that she would be more inventive but this album is basically just a nice mild pop selection of songs that only her soaring voice made interesting.Only "Art Of Melancholy" and oh-so-short "Prima Donna" are exceptional, the rest is largely forgotten now already.
The Elton John duet is perfext example of this album - nice but uninvolving.Detroit soars efortlessly above the clouds but songs are really not so great.I love them only because she sings them,in less capable hands it would be just another album. As her next album was angry-guitar filled work,I am actually a bit reserved about her future work already.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent recording.
Well who would ever expect Marcella Detroit would do this well on her own? All 13 songs are perfectly written and arranged. Read more
