"Punk Mambo" is the epitome of "world music." Their all inclusive punky-poppy-rocky-boppy-happy-go-lucky sound that makes even those with two left feet want to dance. The lyrics are in English, French, Spanish, Swahili... and more. Because they draw from many different cultural sounds and musical traditions, they appeal to every audience member they enounter. At concerts, everyone boogies: punks, skaters, preps, kids, geriatrics, baby boomers...people from every race and all walks of life. (Perhaps their ability to meld many different sounds comes from Babaloo's conception in Jamiaca Plain, a great little neighborhood of Boston, where many races, classes and creeds can get along.) No matter where your music taste lies, you chould check out their two CDs: "Punk Mambo," and "Hardcore Juju," both being a spunky synthesis of mambo, reggae, salsa, ska, rock, juju, punk, hardcore, & merengue.

"Punk Mambo," is a very fun and original CD by the Boston based group Babaloo. I bought it at one of their shows a year and a half ago and I listen to it regularly. This is a band with charisma and energy that is all about dance and the merging of many different types of music.
I live in Boston and have had the opportunity to follow Babaloo's rise during the past year. They have grown immensely as a band in the two years since this CD was released. But it is still a good representation of the joy they put out in their music, and the fun that is a benchmark of their performances. The lyrics (written mostly by the lead singer, "Unca B", a Frenchman with unparalleled energy) and music feels like a true collaboration between the varied cultures and interests of the eclectic band.
I especially like "Samba Formosa," sung by Smith Crankshaft, the New Jersey born lead guitar player and lone woman in the band. The opening sequence starting with one instrument and then slowly adding one by one until you have them all playing together is one of the best parts of the CD. Smith has been writing a lot these days and I am anxious for their new CD (to be released May 1st) because of the great "girl songs" she's been singing. One of the first, called "Sucker" is included on this CD. It has become a crowd favorite, always requested and sung along too by the audience. There are many different kinds of music represented including a great Reggae song called "Driving to the Beach."
If you like to dance and you like music that is truly fun, then you need to have Babaloo in your life. I almost don't want to tell anyone about them, for fear they will become too popular, but everyone deserves some Punkmambo.

As a Boston native, I've been going to Babaloo shows for a few years now, and they just keep getting better. This is one of the most amazing bands I've ever heard, mainly because of the amazing range of different musical styles they employ. Their African, reggae, mambo and merengue sounds are wonderfully authentic. This CD features some of my favorite songs of theirs, including 2 songs sung by the lovely Smith Crankshaft, who is no longer in the band, but she has been known to grace us with her presence once in a while. Definitely buy this CD, but if you really want the essence of Babaloo, check out one of their live shows and be completely blown away. Enjoy!

I've been at their concert on 1998's Thanksgiving at the HOUSE OF BLUES in Boston and I have to admit - It was an excellent session, lots of drive, energy, fun. I was a bit disappointed when I purchased the CD - I think if recorded live , they would have sounded fresher. Music on the CD is a bit slow for me, however the great diversity of musical styles, cultures, instruments and languages still makes BABALOO a worthwile to listen at anytime. I look forward to get their second CD.

I am somewhat biased having seen Babaloo a number of times live, but Punk Mambo captures most of the bands energy on disc. I have listened to this disc many, many times and still enjoy it from beginning to end. Babaloo's stylistic mix of music makes this album appealinng to all types of music fans. Whether you're listening at home alone or entertaining, this disc is a must have. Buy this disc, go to a party and pop it in around midnight, watch what happens......

I just bought the punk mambo CD and I have been dancing to it in the shower, ironing my clothes, cooking dinner and drinking cocktails at my swanky friend's NYC loft. I really think this band is reaqlly going to become a huge success. I say that confidently because I am really picky about music today. I am just happy I got this disc. BUY IT NOW! TODAY! It' not that much money.

Babaloo could be one of the best bands playing the Boston club cirquit. They mix a blend of Island Music with big band arrangement and multi-lingual vocals. Smith Crankshaft plays a mean guitar accompanied by great horns and drums. Don't miss them LIVE if you are around Boston, but be the first to get in on a very great secret, Babaloo!!
