Rashid Khan is one of India's most talked about young male vocalists of the Hindustani tradition. Given that some of the doyens of the Hindustani stage such as Bhimsen Joshi and Pt Jasraj are getting old, the centre stage has become open for this young artiste to blossom. In fact Bhimsen himself, referred to Rashid as "an assurance for the future of Indian music". Rashid represents great tradition and he blends it seamlessly with a style rich in technique, vocal ability & range. The piece in Bageshri, brings the listener from the depths of the beauty of the raga form all the way to the acrobatics of the microtonal forms in breathtaking speed in the crescendo in the Drut. The tarana is Desh is simply spectacular. Desh has typically been used in Indian patriotic compositions, but so many of the complex emotions it has in it have seldom been brought out in a performance, the way Rashid has in this record. All in all, if this is the first Rashid Khan album you are buying, don't wait and if you are a seasoned Rashid fan, this is a must for your growing Rashid collection. Enthralling!
