A friend who is an opera buff and something of a historian introduced me to this pioneer and almost forgotten voice. A Marian Anderson contemporary,Ms.Dobbs is a diva in her own right with a sweet and powerful voice. A joy and thrill to listen to.

Coloratura repertoire is difficult to compile. You would think that a "best of sample" just wouldn't flow. Well, sometimes old-timers shrug and this CD shows you why. The repertoire selection is diverse, ranging from arias with full orchestra to intimate art songs. And Ms. Dobbs is at the height of her purity of sound and technique.
Dobbs is currently a judge for the Marian Anderson Vocal Competition. Hearing this CD places you in a different time when she made such an impact on music-making as a whole. This CD is great for the vocal student learning new songs and diction, and at the same time for the expert seeking quality. Simply exceptional, it's a CD you can't just copy/burn from a friend.

I found that this early African /american coloratura soprano was one of the first Metropolitan opera stars and joined Marian Anderson, Reri Grist, and others at the Met. Without these pioneers we would not have a Leontyne Price, Martina Arroyo, Grace Bumbry, Shirley Verret, George Shirley. There are more that I cannot remember. Mattiwilda Dobbs came from an old and revered family. I liked her light voice, terrific singing ability. I particularly liked the Gavptte amd Berceuse. She was on pitch, sang beautifully, her phrasing was excellent, her voice showed great beauty and flexibility in the arias on this CD. I think that this CD is a rarity. Perhaps she sang in many roles but when I searched Amazon there were only a few CD's with this diva. A great purchase from Amazon.
