I got this toy for my 21 month old and she absolutely loves it. When I first looked at the picture it didn't look like much and I couldn't figure out how the colors were going to "change". Once we got it and used it we saw that the disks of color blend together to create all the colors of the rainbow as it spins. My daughter loved it, both my husband and I thought it was neat and the grandparents fell in love with it too. My father in law actually wanted one himself for "stress relief".
The toy has a suction cup that sticks to the floor and so it doesn't fall over as it spins and the handle is pretty easy for a child to learn to pump up and down. It is made of plastic and metal, but the handle is not attached all that well and it only took a couple of tosses by my toddler before the handle fell off. It can be popped back on but it's going to come off again and again. It's probably fairly durable for child that doesn't toss his/her toys, but not for one that does. All in all it is a really neat toy. Fun for the whole family.

I have seen complaints about a flimsy handle BUT that is the best part!!!
At what, mechanically is the most stressed point, rather than bend or break,it is designed to snap apart.

I told my granddaughter that anyone can break things but a smart child can fix things. There is applause and "high fives" every time she "fixes" the handle.

After several years the joint is still secure and I am buying a new one only due to cosmetic dings and dents.

Our kids (1 and 3) adore this top! In response to a low review - yes, the handle detaches, but it's made to do so - that way it is easier to pack and travel with, and it keeps the toy from actually breaking. The top handle portion detaches in one long piece that appears to be perfectly safe. An adult can detach it when desired, and it's only happened twice when our kids were playing with it - and we've had it for a month with daily play. It pops right back on. Our kids play with this top for hours, and adults and visitors do, too! The changing colors and shades are fascinating, and the whistle is quite fun as well. It's a timeless toy, and a deal at this price!!!

Having a top is just part of childhood. This one is a great beginning top. I love the fact that the top piece pops off if it is banged or bent so that the toy does not break, you just put it back together. Our 11 month old and 2 year old grandchildren both delight in playing with this toy. It is not as popular as their trucks, they are boys, but it is a great addition that helps children learn about force and motion and color mixing since when the top spins the colors merge.

I had this top when I was a kid, almost 30 years ago in Europe. I still remember the circles whose colors would blend and change when it spun! I was looking for a pump top for my toddler, and when I saw this, my heart melted with nostalgia. I was so excited, that I didn't pay attention to the handle's design, and now I regret it. Even though the bottom part of the top is the same as back in the day, the handle has been redesigned and made WORSE, like so many things nowadays! Why can't they keep the old design and construction?!? These old toys worked, and they were built to last generations!!! My childhood top's handle was easy to pump, moved smoothly, and if I could pull it out of whatever storage it's in right now, I bet it would still pump smoothly. This thing, on the other hand, has a cheap, flimsy design that falls apart quickly. The core of the pump is a metal spiral thing, and by the sound of it, when you pump it, there's metal grinding on plastic, so a lot of friction and resistance. As you can imagine, when metal meets plastic in a battle of friction, the plastic won't last long. I'd bought another similar top by another company recently, and it was literally spewing plastic shavings when I pumped it. Needless to say, the plastic got shaved down enough that eventually the top stopped spinning altogether, within a few weeks of occasional use. Now that I'm looking more closely, all pump tops that I can find have this same design! That's ridiculous! This particular model spun okay for a few days, but within a week of occasional use it was already grinding down and hard to push. Right now it's very hard to push it down and there's a lot of resistance inside, with the plastic starting to shave off.Read more ›

I was quite disappointed to find that the red and blue "handle" of this toy is made out of plastic ... Since it is such a classic toy and is partially tin, I had expected the other parts to be a higher quality and perhaps to be made out of wood. I don't think I would have ordered it if I had realized beforehand that about 70% or so of this toy is plastic... It just feels cheap. Love the concept, hate the plastic.

My son got this for his first birthday and it was an immediate hit with him and the older kids (ages 3-6). They were mesmerized by the spinning and color changing and have continued to play with it. It's also nice to have something that doesn't make noise or require batteries. Highly recommend this!
