Unquestionably, Art Tatum is the greatest jazz pianist, possibly pianist (Horowitz was even in awe of him), of the 20th century. Since Oscar Peterson has frequently worn that title for the past 50 years, I once compared their recordings of "Tenderly." Even though Tatum's stayed closer to the melody, it was still melodically and harmonically more complex than Oscar's. To fully appreciate Tatum, it helps to have a trained ear for harmony, to have struggled with mastering the piano, and to have familiarity with the "American Songbook."
This present set, while an adequate introduction to Tatum's genius, is somewhat misleading, as I was under the impression it would be a distillation of his best recordings from his entire career. Instead, it's merely a condensed, single-disc edition of a previously-released 2-CD recording on Verve. Moreover, all but 2 of the tunes were recorded at one sitting in producer Roy Heindorf's home in 1955.
The sound quality is "enhanced" in comparison to the vinyl recordings I own. While it's gratifying to hear the brilliance of the treble end of the piano, I also detect distortion in the middle register. In fact, the "realism" of the present recording seems slightly overdone, sacrificing some of the warmth, roundness, and beauty of Tatum's piano sound.
In sum, this series of "Ultimate" recordings is a marketing ploy by Verve with very mixed results.

Art Tatum was a phenomenon of nature. Tatum, a partially blind pianist, played with a matchless speed, grace, and nuance in his interpretations of American popular song. This compilation provides an excellent introduction to Art Tatum's towering body of solo piano work. While the most frequent comparison is made to Oscar Peterson, I believe it does a disservice to both men. Oscar led some of the most fleet, co-ordinated and fluent trios in Jazz history, while Tatum is best heard as a solo performer-other musicians struggled mightily in his wake, even to simply keep pace in the studio or on the bandstand. Tatum's evershifting sense of harmonics was equal to that of an entire orchestra. This selection was made by a master pianist, Hank Jones, and reflects the sense of why Art Tatum is truly a musician's musician, The anthology has given me endless pleasure, especially when I don't have the time available (or the concentration) to bite off larger chunks of this wonderful body of work. A must-have if you lack any of Art Tatum's solo work in your library..

What can I say that hasn't already been said about the "God" of the piano? Well I can't add anything else because the music and his exemplary skills are second to none! However, My only observation about this CD is that it's identical to the existing release " 20th Century Piano Genius" Only this one has been skimmed down to a single CD versus the other is a double CD containing more music from the same sessions.

So use caution as not to make a duplicate purchase. If this is your first exposure to Art Tatum, Then I highly recommend this CD. If you already have the aforementioned CD, Then avoid this one (despite the low price)

Art Tutum, in my opinion is quite possibly the greatest piano player ever. (definetely not an understatement) This is a collection of piano solo standards done by Art Tatum. Among these are some favorites like Someone to watch over me, Weep a willow for me and Sweet lorraine. The thing that makes these selections unique is that they all sound completely different from what you would expect from a traditional jazz pianist. He simply doesn't just play them he twists them around his fingers he bends the melodies to make them his own. This collection is group of songs selected by Hank Jones a prety good piano player in his own right. In the liner notes he talks about how he used ot watch Art Tatum play after hours in the homes of friends after some of his shows. His words are almost as if he is in awe of him. Listening to him play I know I am A absolute must have.
