GameSpot Review

Street Fighter Alpha 3, Capcom's latest flagship title, has made its way to the PlayStation in a nice, timely fashion. This faithful arcade conversion sees Capcom bend over backwards to deliver its most rewarding home conversion yet. This time around, a pack of returning veterans has its first "Alpha incarnation" alongside four newly introduced women fighters. For those still skeptical about the PlayStation's 2D capabilities, Street Fighter Alpha 3 will make short work of any resident doubts. The game's graphical prowess and arcade-perfect gameplay combined with its cache of bonus modes makes Street Fighter Alpha 3 the latest standard for 2D excellence on the PlayStation.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 has a total of 34 characters, four of which become unlocked only after you play through the game's various modes. The alumni from Street Fighter Alpha 2 are joined by four new fighters: Karin Kanzuki, Rainbow Mika, Juli, and Juni. However, only Karin and R. Mika can be considered truly new since both Juli and Juni have moves and animations derived from Cammy. For Street Fighter Alpha 3, Capcom also brought back old favorites like Guile, E. Honda, Blanka, Balrog, Dee Jay, and Fei Long. In an effort to give the game detail beyond any of the previous Street Fighter Alphas, Capcom has given each character a unique ending. This means that bonus characters such as Guile, Evil Ryu, and Shin Akuma all have endings that reflect their origin or purpose.

Each of the older characters retains moves from previous Street Fighter games, while a few receive new abilities that are balanced through the "ism" system. Street Fighter Alpha 3 employs the ism system as a method of establishing balance and strategy. X-ism, A-ism, and V-ism determine moves and attributes that carry their own pros and cons. The isms are imbued with advantages and limitations so you will need to discover which mode fits your fighting style most. For instance, the advantage of X-ism is that it has the highest damage rating, but you can't air-block or ground-recover. X-ism also has the upper hand when it comes to guard power - this makes the mode ideal for players accustomed to classic Street Fighter 2 regulations. A-ism, on the other hand, is the mode most players have become accustomed to since the premiere of Street Fighter Alpha. The "A" in the name represents Alpha, where abilities such as air blocking, air and ground recoveries, taunts, a three-tiered super meter, and Alpha counters have all become the de facto expectation. V-ism stands for "variable" mode and is by far the most difficult mode to master in Street Fighter Alpha 3. With V-ism, you have the ability to activate Alpha 2-style custom combos. Aside from the various pros and cons of each ism, there are also a few moves that are ism specific. All of these considerations factor into choosing the right ism for your fighting style.

In a show of bravado reminiscent of Namco's Tekken series, Capcom has added a wealth of extras to the PlayStation version of Street Fighter Alpha 3, making it Capcom's best home conversion ever. When you first enter the game, only arcade and world tour are available for selection. Arcade mode takes you through a regimented plotline for each character, complete with dialogue, sub-bosses, and of course, the showdown with M. Bison. The world tour mode combines round-to-round fights with RPG-like elements, similar (perhaps to the point of seeming a little ripped off) to the Edge Master mode in Namco's Soul Blade. You go on a "world tour" with your favorite characters and gain experience points by defeating challengers from each country. Gathered experience points go towards "leveling up" your character, like in an RPG - the better the fight, the bigger the reward. While your characters level up, they will also be granted access to special ism-plus abilities, such as auto guard, alpha cancel, and damage plus. Once you have earned these skills, you can then augment each ism with abilities previously unavailable in normal arcade play. For instance, X-ism lacks air blocking, but through world tour mode, you can enable an X-ism character to perform air blocking. Character levels peak at 32, while each ism maxes out at level five (considered mastery). As an added bonus, you can take characters you created in world tour mode to fight in versus mode by importing from memory cards. Aside from world tour, you can also unlock the following modes: team battle, survival, dramatic battle plus, and final battle. Kudos to Capcom for making a Street Fighter with more replay value and flexibility than ever before. --Chieh Chou

Product Description

ALL-TIME CLASSIC. FOR SONY PLAYSTATION VIDEO GAME SYSTEM. SUPER FUN. GREAT FOR COLLECTORS. HERE IS SOME INFO ON THE GAME. The third in the Alpha series has a total of 31 fighters, the most in the series so far. New characters include old favorites E. Honda, Blanka, Vega, Cammy, T. Hawk, Dee Jay, Juni and Juli. Some of the newest fighters on the block include a former Final Fight character (Cody, who has been in jail since the last Final Fight game, or so his clothing suggests), Karin Kanzuki and Rainbow Mika. The major difference between this Alpha and the last two are the new play modes World Tour, Arcade, VS, Training and Entry. World Tour - Simply choose your fighter and travel around the world, fighting the home town heroes that you run into. The more fights you win, the stronger you fighter becomes. You can also learn new moves, and there are three levels of Super moves to choose from before you start each round (called Isms). Arcade - A simple conversion of the arcade version. Beat each fighter with your chosen warrior, in three rounds per match (much the same as past versions of Street Fighter) Versus - Two human players battle it out. Training - A good way to learn all the super moves that are available, against a dummy. Entry - If you save your character during the World Tour mode, you can upload him here to use in the other modes in the game (especially handy for Training). Finally, if you complete certain areas of the game three new fighters become available, including another old favourite in Guile, Evil Ryu and Shin Akuma.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Street Fighter for PSX, December 2, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
If one were stuck with having to make a desert island selection of PSX games (on the unlikely event you were to be stuck on a desert island with only your PSX, a big tv, and all the electricity you'd need), it would be hard not to grab SFA3 as I can think of no other game (even including non-fighting games) that has earned so many hours of replay. Capcom really cleaned up the fighting engine used in alpha2, giving the game a much smoother feel, while also managing to incorporate air combos without making the game feel spastic (it is rather thrilling for instance to be able to knock someone in the air with guile and then immediately hit them again with his blade kick.) Throws have been made more difficult, but since the command is specific, throws are much more precise. Beyond the improved game engine you can now select from three different chracter types called -isms (no, you arn't chosing your character's political affiliation!) Anyone remember slash and bust mode from Samurai Shodown? The three different modes customize your character, Xism being similiar to play in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (quite a mouthful), with one big super, no air blocking, but takes and gives out more damage. Aism is standard Alpha fighting mode with multiple super moves, air blocking, etc. while V-ism gives your character a shadow which repeats the attacks of your character (also appearing in SFA2). These are not the only differences between modes though, as most characters actually have one or two different moves in the various modes. Were this not enough, SFA3 has incorporated every character in the SF series so now you can play Honda, Blanka and T-Hawk (should you have the desire to do so.) On top of this, there are several options which will add hours of game play to this already fantastic game. First is the world tournament mode where you can build your character into an unstoppable fighter. The ability to customize characters in this mode and bring them into versus games or even normal arcade games is very exciting. The ability, for instance to make a 32 level Shin Akuma that can do his Raging Demon move every 10 seconds, and if the move connects, your opponent takes 60% damage...well it is a great way to work out your aggressions. Also there is the fun of making characters that can use the best of all the -isms (Aism character that can do V-ism custom combos). You can even give your character the chain-combo option like SFA1 and Dark Stalkers. Other options are even crazier. My favorite is the ability to team up with another player against the computer. On the PSX you must play ryu and ken or two of the same characters. Survival mode is also quite enjoyable if you have made a 32 level character and you want to fight as many characters as quickly as you can. Infinite survival model lets you take your skill as far as it will go! This game is not for everyone but if you enjoy fighting games (even if you have not enjoyed the other street fighter games) you should give alpha 3 a chance. If you are a street fighter fan, then you must purchase this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars What can i say its street fighter, December 16, 2000
By Curtis M. Hiott "Movie king" (mt.pleasant, south carolina United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Street fighter alpha 3 might be the best street fighter out there to date. It has awesome game modes cool levels and best of all its the never ending fun of a 2d fighter. The graphics are what you would expect froma 3d fighter a little choppy and an occasional glitch or two or maybe an occasional mergence of fighters but all in all its one of my favorite game out there. Ihave been an avis street fighter fan all the way back to the SNES version of street fighter 2 turbo! i would encourage anybody to get street fighter alpha 3 because its fun and hey its down to 20 bucks now!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the definative Street Figher game!, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game has all of the classic characters from Super Street Fighter 2 turbo plus all of the characters from Street Fighter Alpha 2 and then more. This game introduces 3 different fighting styles, which make the game an endless challenge to master. A new feature allows you to build your characters strength, then use them in different modes. If you ever want to buy a Street Fighter game, or any fighting game, this should be at the top of your list.
