2.0 out of 5 stars Should I laugh or should I cry?, October 25, 1999

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The cd only can be meant as a joke on Rush fans. The bands featured on this "tribute" are not very talented and the sound is muddy. I wonder how Rush could give their o.k. for this album, which is really hard to swallow for their devoted following. But somehow it's funny to listen how Rush's fine songs are pulled through the mincer, isn't it? It comes closer to the idea of a tribute album than "Working Man" did. Rush's other tribute album was just trying to duplicate their songs, while "Red Star" brings some new interpretations. However, if you liked grindcore/death metal, this album could appeal to you. All in all, you shouldn't take this release seriously, but all of us Rush fans are bored stiff with cheesy tribute albums. We keep waiting for some VITAL SIGNS from Rush themselves!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ain't nothin' like the real thing., April 4, 2007
It has never been a problem marketing the talentless to the tasteless. This album, with one minor exception, stands as an example to that fact.
As a long-time Rush fan I almost found listening to this CD sacrileges'.
Why would anyone dumb-down Rush's music in this way? The death-metal "vocalists" sound like they're gargling with broken glass. (My daughter actually thought they were trying to sing like the Cookie Monster!)
If you ever wondered how Rush's music would sound stripped of it's integrity, this is the album for you.
I found there was actually one track on this CD that made the purchase worthwhile: Freewill. The vocalist covering this track just nails the very high "cell of awarness" line. That kind of power and range has to be respected. Accordingly, I give him three stars for that one note.
