Hiss and break-up, January 10, 2001
If you like quiet music or wish to be mobile then these are definitely not for you.Unless the volume reaches a certain level, then there is just too much hiss. To drown out the hiss you either need to increase the volume sufficiently that you cannot hear anything else in the room (that's not very high since these are closed earphones), or play different music. Even when you are within 2 meters of the transmitter, moving your head just a couple of inches can result in signal break-up. If you are prepared to sit still and listen to rock music at the right volume then the sound quality really is quite good. However for over $200 more flexibility is expected both in terms of mobility and clearity. In mono the hiss goes away, as does the signal breakup (within 10 meters). However, you are paying for stereo headphones. The batteries don't last long (maybe 4 hours) and to recharge them you must connect a cable between the headphones and the base unit and push a switch on the base. With some other makes you only need sit them on a stand. Also the batteries cannot easily be swapped. So if you want to listen for 6 hours, or you forgot to charge them, you'll just have to wait until they are recharged. You cannot just insert a new battery. They are a bit on the heavy side. Something I do like is that there is no tuning dial for the radio signal, so cannot accidently detune them.
