Product Description

Editorial Review

Straight from the arcades roars this home adaptation of the all-time racing classic, San Francisco Rush. Burning rubber and laying down tread, you barrel across the Golden Gate Bridge for the privilege of using the rolling streets of San Francisco as jumping ramps and its freeway off-ramps as race track. A choice of eight different cars, featuring various degrees of speed and handling, allows for a selected degree of difficulty. The fastest of these machines is a rocket of a car, in which only the most skilled of drivers can hope to survive. San Francisco Rush allows for three different racing perspectives, including an adrenaline-pumping first-person view that really delivers the white knuckle experience.

Four tracks through and around San Francisco set the scene, while six play modes and weather control allow for some variety. Among these modes is a circuit feature that allows for some extended play and an extreme feature where the other cars can get downright nasty with you. The choice of using a standard or an automatic transmission simplifies things so players can just jump in and enjoy, but if you want to spend a couple of moments, anyone can easily master all of the available options.

Like all racing games,San Francisco Rush would offer a superior experience with a racing wheel, but the standard controller doesn't take anything away from the good time. One drawback to this game is the limited selection of vehicles and the lack of an option to modify the vehicles you drive. This, along with the not-so-realistic handling of the vehicles, may turn off the racing purists.

Although San Francisco Rush doesn't compare graphically to its arcade cousin, it's still a decent ride and a worthy selection for racing junkies. --Joshua B. Coombs

Pros:

  • Uncomplicated gameplay
  • Minimal repercussions from high speed joy riding (you rarely wipe out)
Cons:
  • Substandard graphics
  • Little vehicle choice
  • Unrealistic handling
  • Limited number of tracks

GameSpot Review

Have you ever loved a book and then been disgusted when it's turned into a really bad movie? That's exactly the feeling you'll get when you play this version of San Francisco Rush. You'll be left to wonder what kind of world we live in where such an amazing arcade game could be turned into such a piece of trash. Folks, this game is about as bad as games get.

In case you haven't had a chance to play the arcade version (or the decent N64 port), San Francisco Rush is a racing game set on the treacherous streets of the City by the Bay. You compete against the clock and against other racers through a series of great courses. The arcade game immersed you so fully that you could actually smell the Rice-A-Roni in the air, but the PlayStation version fails to deliver any of this excitement.

For starters, the graphics are miserable. The other cars look like bricks; walls and other objects flicker in and out of existence as you drive by them; and a bizarre, useless radar fills up a big chunk of the left screen. The game suffers from serious pop-up problems: The landscape ahead appears suddenly as a white blot and then choppily fills in as it approaches. The constant fill-in on the horizon is very distracting, and it makes focusing on the race difficult.

The control won't win any awards either. You can pick one of eight cars, but the steering is sluggish and unresponsive no matter which car you choose. Imagine driving an 18-wheeler on an iced-over lake, and you've got the idea. The game's sound is completely uninspired, with music that sounds like it was rejected by the makers of Cruisin' USA for the Nintendo 64.

San Francisco Rush tries to offer up a lot of options, some of which aren't available in the arcade game. There are four tracks to choose from (it's missing all the ones from The Rock arcade upgrade, which are present in the N64 version, though it has one entirely new course), and you can choose day, night, or snow effects for each course. In the grand prix mode, you also get to race on each track in the reverse direction. There are several different racing modes, both one- and two-player. The "explosive" mode forces you to maintain a speed of at least 60mph or your car will explode (hmmm, that might make a good movie). Unfortunately, none of these options can make up for the lousy graphics, sound, and control.

We all know that the PlayStation can handle racing games exceptionally well; just look at Need for Speed III as a shining example of the system's capabilities. It's a real shame that Midway blew the opportunity to bring the joy of this wondrous arcade game home to PlayStation owners. --John Broady

1.0 out of 5 stars San Francisco Rush, November 24, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is terrible. Control is awful, load times are way too long, graphics are very simplistic. This is a great game in the arcade and on Nintendo 64, but on the playstation, my console of choice, it is very disappointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but servicable, November 10, 1999
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
The graphics are mediocre, the fog and pop-up are dire, and the cars handle like wet fish, but the best thing about SF Rush remains the wonderful track designs, full of wild jumps and shortcuts. The tracks are faithful to their arcade counterparts, so if you want to go under the truck and jump on top of the buildings on track two, go for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should have been -450 stars, June 25, 2001

I have played a few rotten games but this one was ridiculous. It was one of those games that I would not buy if it was to have cost a penny. I have played the N-64 version and it was great so I figured that it would be just like it man I was wrong. I wish it would have just allowed you to not have a timer trust me this game is not worth it. The graphics are not all that great nor is anything else.
