I bought this tool before doing a very large deck covered with 5/4 Pau Lope. It is a great improvement over the Stanley Board Bender, because it locks in place, reducing our manpower needed. The problem stems from the soft metal that makes up the BoWrench. The pin began to bend after a few days, and the hole the pin went through got larger and larger. We also bought the adapter for double joists. That was a great success, except that the pieces that lock the head in place eventually started to slip. We reversed them and they worked a while more. Then we removed them and filed them down, so they had sharp edges again. Summary: a good tool which, with some modifications at the production level, could make it a life long tool.

The BoWrench is the best decking tool I have ever used because its easy to use, and it doesn't mar joists like other ones. As a contractor that builds a couple of decks a year, this has paid for its self many times over. You can achieve proper gap spacing with out digging through the lumber pile for straight boards(if they exist anymore!). I would highly recommend the BoWrench to any deck builder.

All I can say is how could you build a solid deck out of todays quality lumber without this tool. It actually costs me money to own this tool. Since I retired I've been working building decks and I always charge by time and materials. Since owning the BoWrench I have lost money because of how little effort it takes to flex warped lumber into position for screwing down to the joists. I forgot it one day worked 8 hrs. and only got one third of my project completed, remembered it the next day and did the other two thirds in the same amount of time. Never will leave it at home again.

My deck is 5/4 x 6 Ipe on treated joists. I capped the joists with Grace Vycor flashing (flexible stick-on rubber flashing) for rot protection. I found the Bo Wrench slips on the flashing, partly because the grip pins are smooth, making it difficult to use. Removing the flashing would, of course, leave the joists unprotected. So beware if you are using flexible joist flashing. If the manufacturer added some roughness on the surface of the gripping pins or perhaps a hard-rubber ring near the bottom of the pins, it might alleviate this problem.

Also, the orange paint on the tool left faint orange streaks on the sides of the Ipe deck boards, and the wire clips for the retaining pins pop off much too easily.

Still, I found it to be a valuable tool.

Before purchasing this I read some conflicting reviews, some saying they had many issues and others saying they had none. After using the BoWrench I decided to write this review to clear up some of the problems that some people say they experienced. First, if you spent a little extra money on exotic hard wood decking(Ipe, Garapa, Cumaru, Tiger Wood, etc) then this tool is as necessary as a drill is to build your deck. I built a 12'x16' deck and used this tool on almost every board. The frame was standard 2x7(finished 1.5x7) pressure treated lumber. For the decking I used 1x6(finished 21mm x 140mm) Tiger Wood. I strongly encourage you to use this tool with two people(one to hold the wrench tight and the other to drill the boards) otherwise it would be rather difficult. If used properly, this tool will be able to do everything you need. I have also uploaded some images for the main product image that will help you get a better understanding of the instructions that follow. Here is how I would recommend you use this tool. Once you have on end of the board secured to the frame joist(we face screwed and plugged all our boards), work from the secured end down. At every(very important) joist, use the BoWrench with spacers and squeeze the board being installed so that the spacers are tight between the boards. I used Johnson Deck Mate 3/16" spacers and I highly recommended those in particular. I purchased three of them, also from Amazon, and that was plenty. You want the spacers, 4-6 inches out, on both sides of the joist that you are using the BoWrench on. While still holding the wrench tight, secure the deck board to the joist but only at the joist being pressed. Repeat this process at each joist where the gap is too large, working your way in a line from the first secured end of the deck board.Read more ›

I have learned of this tool when building a deck with my brother-in-law. When I used it for the first time I couldn't believe the leverage you get with it. I had 20 foot long decking to screw down and without this tool it would have taken at least 3 times as long. Since then, I bought one for myself, having to re-deck my mother-in-law's balcony. This tool is a dream. I actually waited for the tool to arrive by mail order before proceeding any further on the balcony job. I knew it would save me a lot of aggrevation. Well worth whatever you pay for it even if you use it only once!

I used the tool to reassemble a water damaged deck. I rebuilt a rotted, irregular shaped sleeper frame and put back in place about 18 warped 6" Ipe boards. I wished the tool gave me a bit more leverage with some of the most recalcitrant boards, but it did the job. I don't have a huge amount of experience building decks. I can't compare the BoWrench with other products, but I wondered if the cost of tool was high relative to the materials that went into the unit. Other issues:

1. This was not a problem for me, but, if your deck is walled in, and your boards are warped at the rim joists, the tool is going to be of marginal (sic) help.
2. The instructions are minimal.
3. The cotter pins have a tendency to pop out. This started as an occasional problem, but it seemed to increase in frequency over time and it seemed most likely to happen when I was working with the trickiest boards. By the time I reached my last few boards, the pins were popping out on 30-40% of my attempts to use the tool. I was working on a roof deck; the entire neighborhood probably heard my cursing. There has to be a way to provide a product that, out of the box, has a more secure fastener for the clevis pins.

I suggest all three of the following remedies to the issue with the cotter pin: (a) The manufacturer should supply a more secure pin. (b) The manufacturer should supply a few extra pins in the parts package. (3) The deck builder should be sure to bring extra pins to the work site.

The minimalist parts components and the above defects did not make me feel that the tool was a great value. On other hand, given the warped boards I was handling, the tool was invaluable. I am not sure how I would have reassembled the deck without the BoWrench.
