Although "Live & Well" is a rather unique and dynamic work of art which contains ten tracks, it's actually two sides in one...no, make that two ALBUMS in one, being that the first five selections make up the "Live" part, while the latter half of this disc features studio cuts - the "Well" half. There's no comparing or contrasting both halves of this CD, as the live material and the studio material compliment each other quite nicely, and without any major flaws, too. The only minor flaw on the studio tracks which feature blues legend Al Kooper on piano, is his playing, although quite masterful, comes across as being barely audible for the most part. Kooper's piano digitry is somewhat drowned out by the heavy-bottom bass playing featured here, which is why a remastered version of "Live & Well" is so desperately needed, complete with bonus tracks. As for the upstanding compositions on display here, B.B. King is up to his usual guitar playing virtuosity, especially on the "Live" versions of "Don't Answer The Door" and "Sweet Little Angel". The lone "Live" instrumental, "My Mood", contains lots of soul-searching, power-driven down-to-earth chords. The studio tracks have a lot to offer as well. "The King of the Blues" really "Gets Down To Business", as he provides some down-home primo licks on the effervescent "I Want You So Bad", the utterly demanding "Get Off My Back Woman", as well as on the "run the gamut-like" studio instrumental "Friends". But, it is on "Why I Sing The Blues", where B.B. really cuts to the chase, as he gives his fans a major clue as to why he's in the business of performing in the first place (besides his mastery and his love of his "girl" Lucille). Besides the work of Al Kooper on the studio-based "Well" selections, Hugh McCracken provides some top-notch guitar licks as well.Read more ›

This album is actually two separate recordings in different places. Although I own this album on vinyl, this is the first I have ever see of it on cd. Side one of the LP, or the first five tracks, are deffinately the smoother and in general, a cooler venue. It has some of his cool early guitar riffs as it's right out of the sixties, and LIVE at that! The quality on vinyl, although not as crisp as something recorded digitally, has kind of a club sound to it so it sounds actually live. "Please Accept My Love" is deffinately a must listen to!

I have been a professional blues musician for 46 years. "Alive and Well" had been my favorite B.B. King album when it originally came out as a 33 rpm L.P., as well as the favorite of many of my fellow musicians. This C.D. reissue is now out of print and not available new. I'm very happy to have found a used one in excellent condition. Listening to it now, 41 years after it was recorded, I am again convinced that it represents the peak of his guitar and singing talent. Guitar players, listen to the rich range of guitar tones that B.B. achieved, back when there were no electonic guitar effects and all he had was one great guitar and one great amplifier. He was changing the pickup settings on that Gibson Stereo guitar and using his playing technique to coax a wider range of tones from the guitar than he does today. Listen also to the fact that, in those days, he conceptualized his guitar solos a whole verse or chorus at a time. The stories he told with his guitar were longer, more complex, better developed. He still plays wonderful guitar and I love him. But, with "Alive and Well," he was channeling his artistic muse and his music was truly inspired.

I first bought this album (yes, album) when it came out in the late sixties, and wore it out jamming and stealing licks from it. It finally occurred to me to get the digital version, and play with BB once again. So I did, and it's just as much fun as it was all those years ago. I was also surprised how much I still remembered note for note, as I played along today. The live tracks have a lot of great blues guitar playing, and will give you a nice workout in the key of Db, if you haven't worked out there lately. The studio tracks are just as good, and provide a satisfying romp up and down the neck. I have many BB recordings, and this is still my favorite.

These albums, "Live & Well" and "Completely Well" were B.B.Kings breakthrough albums into main stream audiences, and the track "The Thrill Is Gone" won him his first Grammy

this is some fine music, not as basic as his very early stuff, but still much more bb king than a producer's idea of the way bb king should sound to make money. frankly, his later tunes were imo too heavily produced, too clean, too close to elevator music.
the reason people buy and listen to bb king records is to hear the blues, his voice and his amazing guitar work, not to hear a slick production with perfectly harmonized backup singers and an orchestra.
if you like the original stuff, but with a mid career live upgrade (read: bb could afford a good backup band) then this is the album for you. i say album on purpose, cause that's what it was in 1971 when i first heard it. it still holds a place of honor in my collection.

The LP itself looks VG+, I'm happy for that. However, the cover isn't a great as billed. More rough than anticipated for a "collectible" categorized album. Plenty of surface rubbing, Corner bumps, and rough edges. Also, I can't put the sleeve & record into the cover because of what seems to be a torn corner that was repaired; maybe 3".

Not the best $20 + $4 s/h I've ever spent, but the vinyl looks good so put a needle on it and enjoy it.
