Here the outstanding Chopin player, Jean-Marc Luisada, joins the very fine Talich Quartet. Plus, bass player Benjamin Berlioz sits in, for a chamber music arrangement of Chopin's first piano concerto, and the original quintet version of Dvorak's Opus 81. The Dvorak is a chamber music treasure. The Chopin a chamber music side line, perhaps. Once rich and/or titled nobility stopped playing live music as background to daily life in sumptious palaces and country estates, chamber music versions of popular classics became less and less and less frequent occasions.

A sort of reformed musical attitude set in, encouraging us all to scorn arrangements since we could pop a good recording of an original work, right into the mobile or home music players, instead of settling for a transcription or an arrangement. So far as Chopin's first piano concerto goes, why opt for a chamber version when you can spin a disc of the full original, piano Steinway or Bosendorfer or Yamaha, plus orchestra?

True to these lights, the chamber version of the piano concerto does have passing moments when it sits ever the slightest bit oddly as a smaller-scaled work, especially for listeners who constantly hold the original concerto in mind as a baseline. Taken on its own terms, though - especially as played here - the chamber version has its own reasons for being.

The Talich Quartet plus bass is fine, indeed. Their playing warm, involved, and paced and balanced very nicely with the keyboard in both works. Either a listener will like Luisada's way with Chopin. Or not.Read more ›

Quator Talich and Luisada shine in this recording .

Marvellous Chopin Nº1 Concerto version with Strings Quintet playing the orchestra part !!!

But Dvorak Quintet is absolutely perfect !

A strong recomendation !!!
