Product Description

From Children's Software Revue® -- "Subscribe Now!"

Your eyes water, but you won't give up. You're searching for a small nut hiding somewhere in a detailed picture of a clock face. You've found the first nut- an acorn. After some intensive looking you spot a metal nut (as in bolt). You click on it to solve the riddle and win another clue toward how to escape from the spooky house. Our testers simply wouldn't stop playing this second program in the I Spy CD-ROM series, which hides thirteen of Jean Marzallo's I Spy puzzles inside a dark mansion. Kids must find their way out of the mansion by solving each riddle. Children look for hidden objects camouflaged in a collection of exotic dolls, a spooky old butterfly collection and an amazing assortment of keys, buttons, paper clips, spiders and so on. Because the child has signed into the program, the software occasionally weaves the child's name into the picture. Also hidden among the rooms is a three-level concentration game, a timed matching game and a create-your-own I Spy puzzle, which lets children make their own puzzles and write their own riddles. It's hard to find fault with the design of this program. Be forewarned that children will be calling for help when they can't find that last fish eye, however. We were pleased to see some innovative features- a moving concentration game and a dark attic where objects are found with the beam of a flashlight. The combination of riddles and games gives the program plenty of replay value and provides a fun way to experiment with language. Because the computer keeps track of the puzzles that have been completed, it's possible to jump to a fresh challenge at any time. This makes this program very easy to get started with, yet extremely challenging, even for adults.
Teaches: reading, language, rhyming, classification, logic, memory
Age Range: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading advertising, March 13, 2000
By Kimberly Greene (Burr Oak, Michigan) - See all my reviews
We purchased this software for our daughters, ages 5 and 9, after enjoying the books. While the content is great, we were extremely disappointed that once you finish the game and exit the mansion that's it. The label on the package states " multi-leveled games encourage replayability". We assumed that meant when you completed the game you could begin again with new clues. WRONG! For thirty dollars I expect my child to be able to use the software again.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Spy Spooky Mansion, May 25, 2000
My daughter, 6, loves this game. The graphics are fun and entertaining. She loves receiving the certificate at the end. My only complaint is that you once you play this game, no new clues are found. It would be nice to play again with another set of clues.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Family Favorite, August 24, 2001
My son is only three and a half, so my husband bought the game with the intention of saving it until our son was older. I got it out for him, and even though it is rated for ages 6-10, it is one of our son's favorites. Given that he can't read, I had to help him at first, but once I showed him where to click to get the riddles read to him, he could play independently (for hours on end). I keep two different user files -- one of a completed game so that he can make all seven ghosts (which requires completing the game); and one uncompleted, so when he completes puzzles the skeleton gives him new puzzle pieces. Other reviewers said that the game was not interesting once played through, but we have not found that to be the case. Our son was _more_ interested in the repetition once he'd got the hang of it. Also, of all the games we have, this is the most pleasant and interesting for the adult helping the child.
