I have been using one of these for my garden pond fountain for a number of years and I'm convinced, nothing electronic can replace these "built-to-last" mechanical timers. When the electronic timer I bought for my aquarium failed to perform after going through the agonizing procedure to program the pitiful thing, I looked for this on Amazon and found it! It's been performing faultlessly now for several weeks and I have complete faith that will continue to so far into the far-distant future. You get what you pay for and with this unit you are getting your moneys worth many times over in peace of mind.

We purchased a house with a swimming pool, and having never owned a pool it's been an education. The old owners had the pool pump running 24/7, which seemed like a waste of energy. After doing a bit of research, it seems like most pools do just fine with three to four hours of water circulation. We also don't get many leaves in the pool, so running the skimmer all day isn't needed for that either. I installed this timer outside, but installed it into a weather proof box I had from an old sprinkler controller I removed (the timer box isn't weather proof). The timer works great. Easy to install. You should be somewhat handy to install. Too early to see how it's affecting my electric bill. Only comes with one set of on/off tabs, so I might buy another set.

Intermatic timer are very reliable and well built. I have used and installed many of these timers for years and have had no problems with them. The time is easy to set and the trippers stay put when properly installed (also easy to do). The timer is also easy to manually overide if needed with the flip of a switch. If used in outdoor location be sure to buy raintight enclosure.

I provided a very favorable review for this timer and then when I looked the next day to see if my review made it public I noticed a lot of reviews talking about this timer being for indoor use only. They have since updated the title of this product to indicate Indoor only and I understand this is sour grapes that I should have thoroughly read the instructions when I installed the unit. I am out of my return period and those reading this may view this as sour grapes but this is unfortunate considering getting the outdoor case costs nearly as much as the entire timer with the outdoor case.

We used this timer for our 30 gallon 120 v water heater. Works great. You set the time for it to turn on and off each day. Simple to use. This is a hard wired timer not a plug in type.

Update: Jan 13, 2016. Have had this timer since May. It stopped keeping time. Dealing with customer support is a joke. You have to sign up for an account online with a user name and password, then fill out your problem then download a form and FAX it back to them. Who has a fax anymore. It has wasted several hours today and still the timer that runs our water heater does not work. It seems to be they are making it hard to discourage people from filing a claim.

They have the WORST customer service I have ever dealt with and that is saying a lot.

We paid extra to get what we though was a good dependable timer to run our water heater. We paid an electrician to install the timer so we will have a added expense to replace the defective one.

At lowes we saw that they carry the replacement clock for the timer, it costs more than the whole unit and it says something that the only part they stock is the clock. Very disappointed not to mention I had to take a cold shower.

I had one of these a long time ago and it worked great. Reading the reviews, I was worried these got "value engineered" to be cheaper. Also some folks indicated they failed, overheated, etc. So comparing it to the one from 30 years ago, it appears almost the same. I had a 220 model before, but for this application, single phase 120 was fine. The box was easy to mount and had "knockouts" for conduits. The mechanism easily drops out, so if it dies, you can leave the box in place, and slip in new guts. I mounted an in-line 3 amp fuse in series with the motor, so if it shorts, the fuse should go and prevent any downside problems. There was a wad of grease thrown on one of the metal shafts, but it did not look like it would be of any real use. So I used synthetic oil and and applied it to the metal gears and other metal moving points. The gears in the motor are nylon or some other plastic and these I did not oil. So far it has been working fine. The contacts appear heavy duty for 10 amps.
