In the past, I've had to replace the occasional broken window, but lately I started stripping paint and I've had to re-glaze all of my 100+ year old wooden windows because the original glazing was starting to fail, and fall off. I've used the stuff in the caulk tube, but I've found it to be extremely messy. I could never get the putty to look just right.

The secret to using this is, you've really got to warm it up before you try to use it. Leave it out in the sun, use a heat gun to soften it, or on a nice warm day, just scoop out a little and roll it around in your hands for a few minutes. You'll also need glaziers' points, a stiff 1" metal scraper, some oil-based primer, and possibly a heat gun. It's also easier if you can take the window pane out rather than trying to replace the glass up on a ladder. If you're replacing broken glass, old putty is next to impossible to scrape off. A heat gun will really soften it up enough that it comes off pretty easily with a metal scraper. Once you have the old putty out, clean the rabbeted area. It's very important to prime the rabbeted area of the sash with an oil-based primer (as the directions say). The primer keeps the bare wood from absorbing the oil in the putty after it's applied, so the putty will last longer. I use regular Kilz primer and a cheap disposable brush. Once the primer dries, set the glass into the window sash. Use glaziers' points every 4-6" or so to hold the glass in place - use your scraper to push them firmly into the wood.

Scoop out a bit of Dap 33 and soften it up in your hands, roll it into a snake and push it into the sash. Take your metal scraper and, while firmly pressing down, drag it down the channel. It will cut off extra putty that is squeezed out.

Pros: Whiter than the old linseed oil glazing putty that used to be sold in pouches, good re-closable container. Unfortunately, I found that compared to the old putties I used to buy in pouches years ago, this stuff has so little adherence to even freshly cleaned and scraped surfaces that I found it nearly impossible to apply to a vertical surface -- it would just refuse to adhere at all and fall off. This resulted in a very uneven looking job. Never had this problem with the old compounds.

I have used DAP33 to glaze windows for many years without any problems. I doubt that the toxic effects stated by OldSalmon were due to DAP33, unless he has allergies to everything. If so he should be wearing rubber gloves no matter what he is touching.

I followed the directions exactly, cleaned all the old putty out, cleaned with linseed oil, warmed the new putty and applied (with great difficulty, as it didn't want to stick to the wood) to window. Waited over two weeks for it to form a skin. It never did. Finally gave up and applied oil base primer, then latex paint. After it dried, I attempted to clean with a razor blade, and the paint and primer peeled right off. Total waste of time.

Use this at work, just can't buy the larger size locally. Price isn't any cheaper buying the larger amount so next time we'll get it locally so it keeps longer.

"Old style" glazing compund. Hard to work with, slow to dry. Next time I'll try more modern stuff--acrylic glazing in a caulking gun type tube.

Worked perfectly for the job I needed it for. I needed to seal something outside with no shrinkage, and the product stays a little malleable.
