GameSpot Review

While Tempest may have been a great game in 1981, this update for the 1990s doesn't really add anything worthwhile. Essentially, there just isn't enough game for your green. Tempest X3 is, at its roots, a clone of Jaguar's Tempest 2000 with a couple of additional modes. Carried over from the Jag version, players will find traditional Tempest, which clones the original vector graphics arcade game; Tempest Plus, which adds assistance from a computer-controlled droid; and Tempest 2000, which contains weapon power-ups, slightly improved graphics, and a warp zone. The two new additions aren't much help: Trippy 2000 is Tempest 2000 with weird colors, tracers, and generally blurry items, and Tempest X3 simply improves on Tempest 2000 by adding light sourcing and clearer graphics. The game casts the player as a two-legged yellow craft that's attached to a tube broken up into several channels. Enemies come up the channels and attempt to grab or shoot the player, who simply rotates around the outside of the tube, destroying anything that comes up the path. The game's sound is standard blips, bleeps, and explosions. The soundtrack is typical video game techno, right down to the sample of Chuck D screaming "Bring that beat back!" It fits the game well, and adds a little bit to the experience. Tempest X3 would benefit from a custom dial controller (more like the original arcade set up), because every home version to date - including this one - has suffered from poor control. Tempest was a fun game during its heyday, but slightly updating the graphics and adding a couple features doesn't make this game ready for the 90s. If you're jonesing for some old-school arcade action, check out something like Namco's Museum series instead - Tempest X3 just isn't worth the money.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. Manufacturer Description

Tempest X offers an updated 3D version to Tempest the single most popular arcade game of all time by adding an organic feel to the web making it come alive during gameplay. Five new 3D enemy types have been added all with their own distinct abilities. The game includes dazzling new visual effects. You will have an all-new ultimate weapon called SuperZapper which explodes freezes or bites enemies. Tempest X is based on a fairly simple concept. The player is a creature at one end of an two-dimensional shape and the player does not want the other creatures (enemies) on the other far end of the "web" to rise up to your end and kill you. The player's job is to shoot at the enemies and kill them before they shoot and kill you.

Atari's gone and made Tempest X3 into a complete blast! Not only do you get the original Tempest, but you get the all new 2000 mode with pyschadelic colors and rich details. The new jump feature is priceless, and the game's addiction level will draw you in like never before. Recommended to retro gamers and newcomers alike- Tempest X3 is not to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Update To A VERY Addictive Game!, October 11, 2000
The original version of Tempest was on my top five list of favorite arcade games--and Tempest X is even better. The game play is basically the same as the original, but there are also some colorful power-up features, and a great techno music soundtrack!

There are only a couple of drawbacks to Tempest X. The original arcade version of Tempest is included (if you'd ever care to play it), but it's also sluggish and crude. Also, Tempest X is so colorful that you can lose track of what's happening. However, in the higher levels, you'll be running mostly on instinct anyway.

That's the real appeal Tempest X really has for me. Once you fall into your own little zone, this game can swallow you whole!

This is an awesome arcade game, and a fantastic remake of the (very original concept, shooter) cabinet game. The original version is included with two other main modes of play including new sound and color to make the experience as visually and audibly entertaining as the original game itself! The other two modes include a remake with new color and music designed by the original concept creator, David Theurer, and a two player challenge mode version of the remake. I also own the PC incarnation of this collection and my only critique would be that the music/songs are not selectable on the Playstation version. The Playstation version does allow for the game to randomly choose the music played, but it will not change again until the entire set of playfields are played through once; this could take the better part of 45 minutes, if your that good.

The addition of a bonus level in the modern version of the game is great, but you may have to turn the volume down on your system during this mode of play to eliminate any misunderstandings. There is a synthesized "female" voice that exclaims "YES" when an achievement is made in the bonus mode; this voice plus the "techno" style music may sound odd to someone not watching the game with you. I had the front door of my home open and my neighbor was listening to me play the game while he was raking his front lawn. To put it bluntly, he thought I was watching porn on the TV by the sound the game was making! Upon viewing the game, with many apologies, he was very relieved to see that the content of my entertainment was not as sideous as he believed.

To sum up: This game is visually and audibly one of the best retro arcade remakes available on any system. It is increasing challenging through game play and confidently thumbs its nose at the typical, unnecessarily carnage ridden games of today. Safe for any age or experience, challenging for any age or experience.
This game WILL play on the Playstation 2, and can be used with the "Pelican Accessories Universal Real Arcade Stick" available here at Amazon.
