GameSpot Review

Duke Nukem for the Game Boy Color is a throwback to the two PC side scrollers of the early '90s that inspired GT Interactive and 3D Realms to take the hero to the third dimension, making him practically a household name. Now that we've grown accustomed to Duke, his witty one-liners and his harsh treatment of anything xenophobic, it's hard for us to return to his humble, 2D beginnings. But at least he's portable. Duke has a few gimmicks up his sleeve as he conquers the alien invaders: a shotgun, a machine and stun gun, a grenade launcher, a rocket launcher, and a flamethrower. He can also drive a hopping tank and a miniature rocket ship. Despite the Duke license and the arsenal of weapons, however, this title bears no resemblance to the current incarnations of the series. But does this game survive on its own? Not really, though the fun of finding a machine gun and laying waste to scores of enemies still can't be beat. The controls in this game (especially jump and crouch) aren't responsive enough to allow Duke to avoid enemy fire. Fortunately, enemy fire doesn't inflict that much damage on the Über-Rambo, so the game basically devolves into a title of getting shot, shooting back, finding health, and repeating. As it is, the game is extremely repetitive, with bland background graphics doing little to add to the action. You can also pick up the letters in "Nukem" to earn an extra Duke, and the letters are present so that you know that you're still heading in the right direction. The game's sound effects are flat and bland (though the default shotgun sounds rather realistic for the Game Boy), and Duke and his enemies have very few frames of animation. With titles like Toy Story 2 and Gex 3 out for the Game Boy, Duke Nukem simply falls short. Sure, you can run around blasting everything in sight and see the occasional splatter of blood, but there are better portable platformers on the market.--Doug Trueman--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Duke continues his reign!, December 15, 1999

Wow, 3D Realms (or should it be Apogee) has finally licenced one of its games to be done "old style". "Duke Nukem GB" has been wrongly argued to be akin to that of "Duke3d". This is a really bad comparison. Duke Nukem GB is actually an advanced version of "Duke Nukem II" which was released for the PC a few years back. Further more the first level is a clone of "Duke Nukem II's" first level, classic.

The game its-self is nicely spread accross 14 or so levels, which are imagenativly constructed and really streach the 8bit architecture of the Game-Boy.

The sounds are great, and the imagenative start up sequence animation really shows us a side of Duke not seen before, stardom.

Buy this game and you won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good game for GameBoy Color., June 16, 2000

It is not made to simulate Duke Nukem 3D, it is supposed to simulate the original Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem 2. The game is well planned for Game Boy color even though it has limited graphic abilities. The sound effects are good, it has good graphics for the GameBoy system and there are many levels. It's a good RPG game. This is a simulation of Duke Nukem 2 not Duke Nukem 3D and it is not wise buying a game without testing it 1st. So, if you're into RPG's, get this game. If you want a 3D Shooter, get a laptop and a 3D game. I hope this review helped you.

I remember when i saw this game in a store and i all ways wanted to get it but i had no money. So i had to sell 4 playstation games 1 game boy game 2 computer games to get it. ...i got mad until i got Duke Nukem for game boy. When i played it it was money well spent cool graphics and cool colors. And when i saw there was blood i forgot i was playing on a game boy.Cool weapons a shotgun, machine gun, stun gun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher and a flame thrower. Just wait till you get to level 2 you'll melt with joy when you get the chain gun one big s.o.b ha ha ha.And theres 36 or more enemies.21 levels of killing. You get to ride in a army tank and a rocket ship. This is not like duke3d for the computer its like Duke 1 and 2 but is still cool.i remember when duke3d came out in 1986 my step dad was a tester so he got a beta version. I hope this helped you. bye.
