Bravo MGM; you've managed yet again to screw up a great movie with a terrible DVD. -It's actually an ORION picture, and I'd hoped that they would've cared more about its appearance, but no such luck. Of my 100+ DVDs, this is one of the worst looking with dull colors and a fuzzy image. (Let's hope they're more careful with their upcoming Woody Allen ORION collection.) This is a rather oldfashioned straight-ahead action suspenser like they just don't make them anymore in Hollywood, but it's difficult to be thrilled about that when you know you can enjoy a much sharper version on TV. Hackman, Heard, Cassidy and Jones lead a good cast, but in order to see them clearly we desperately need a remastering of this otherwise wonderful movie. Until then, avoid like the plague.

The package presents an interesting plot loosely based on the Kennedy asassination. The acting of Hackman, Cassidy and Jones is excellent. The suspense is almost unbearable and the end is very good. The action happens during the cold war and Hackman plays the role of a Special Forces Sergeant in charge of bringing a military prisoner played by Jones to the states to face court martial. Saying more would be given the movie in advance. Anyone interested in an excellent thriller must have this movie in his/her collection.

The package is a great action/thriller. Gene Hackman plays sergeant Johnnny Gallagher think's he been given a routine assignment: to escort a rebellous American soldier Tommy lee Jones from Europe to U.S. for a military court martial. Joanna Cassidy plays Gene Hackmans ex wife . Dennis Franz plays a police detective. This movie was very entertaining movie.

A well-made Cold War thriller that explores some interesting conspiratorial themes.
*Spoilers ahead* Turning on the commentary track with director Andrew Davis confirms that the film (written by John Bishop) was heavily inspired by the JFK assassination, and other conspiracies like Iran-Contra. Davis discusses how the plot deals with the setting up of patsies to take the fall for a state crime - in this case, an Oswald-like character who is recruited to infiltrate a neo-Nazi group, pass out leaflets on the street, and unwittingly helps incriminate himself so he can later be blamed for the assassination of the Soviet leader. The real assassin is played by Tommy Lee Jones, who takes on the patsy's identity. The conspiracy is an international one, made up of people with a vested interest in keeping the Cold War going.

Somehow "The Package" seems to have become one of those films that fell through the cracks of the general public interest and has never received the credit it deserves as a top-notch action/thriller. With a cast featuring Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones you have two magnificent, veteran actors who play well off each other throughout. Hackman plays Career soldier Johnny Gallagher assigned to deliver a package from Berlin to the United States. The package just happens to be Thomas Boyette (Jones)who is a military prisoner.

Once returned to the states, Boyette manages to escape and now begins a cat and mouse game as Gallagher races to find the fugitive who turns out to be an assassin with plans on killing a Soviet Leader and breaking the cold war peace process. Boyette uses clever diguises to avoid capture as he plans his kill. Gallagher receives some much needed assistanc in the form of his ex-wife Eileen (Joanna Cassidy) and Dennis Franz playing yet another tough cop as Detective Milan. Pam Grier and John Heard round out the stellar cast.

Director Andrew Davis would direct Tommy Lee Jones in two more thrillers "under Siege" and "The Fugitive" and proves himself quite deft at handling action/thrillers and mixing between the intrigue and gunplay very well. Hackman is just always a joy to watch and brings such beleivability to every role he plays. This is a top-notch thriller!

American military guy witnesses some weirdness while on duty in Germany. Next thing you know he is escorting another military guy back home. But the escort gets beaten up in the airport after they land in the US. The guy he was escorting has disappeared. The guy was not who they said he was. The escort is now wanted for murder. Chasing and evading ensue.

When in Germany the movie seemed confusing as there were too many people to keep track of. Andd it kinda dragged maybe because I didn't understand who was who and what their connection to each other was. But the odd and rather abrupt transition to the US was about the point I was ready to turn it off it didn't pick up quickly as I still was not getting what was going on. But after arriving in the US things took on the typical chase and hide and seek adventure murder mystery action flick. So at least at that point I could figure out what was going on at that point. It became interesting. But honestly the entire underpinning of this plot was so far fetched it just made the movie silly. And even though some of the characters at the beginning showed up at the end their connection still was not made, for me.

This is your classic 1980s action spy movie.
It is about a American and Russian cold war high level warriors working
together to kill very high-ranking world figure in order to keep their game going,
and maybe upgrade it a little.

Gene Hackman, as the tough good guy, is totally in his element.
As is Tommy Lee Jones, and some other great actors from classic 1980s/early 1990s
tv series and movies like Hill Street Blues, Die Hard, NYPD Blue etc.

It is a classic. But when you watch have in mind that back in that cinematographic era, there was
no need for too much shooting and explosions to make a good action movie
