It's easy to see in what high regard the industry holds Louis Jordan simply by scrolling through this site and seeing the wide variety of CDs covering his music, and from a diverse collection of distributors: MCA of course, given that his entire hit recording career was spent with Decca, as well as Universal, Jazz Archives, Blue Note, Verve, Melodie Jazz Classic, Epm Musique, Delta, Proper Box, and Jsp, to name just a few. The ideal purchase, of course, would be the multi-cd anthology from Bear Family of Germany, but not everyone can afford that set.

This one from the U.K.-based Jasmine outlet is as good as any of the reasonably-priced volumes currently on the market when it comes to originals of his hit singles [he had 57 on what then passed for the R&B charts between 1942 and 1951, 14 of which crossed over to the Billboard Pop charts, and, in addition, he had two more make the Pop charts only]. It's one of several single-CDs I have covering Louis, another of which is the 22-track Let The Good Times Roll from Castle Pie, also based in England. However, as far as I can tell that is not yet listed in Amazon's catalogue.

In a 24-selection compilation Jasmine gives you 22 of those hits, with only tracks 2 and 23 being obscure cuts - at least in North America [they may have had some significance in the U.K.]. The sound reproduction is excellent and the liner notes quite informative.

Born on July 8, 1908 in Brinkley, Arkansas, Louis, whose instrument of choice was the saxophone, first recorded for Brunswick way back in 1929 with The Jungle Band, then moved over to the Clarence Williams orchestra in the early part of the 1930s before linking up with Chick Webb's band from 1936 to 1938.

As a lover of rock and roll and heavy rock and metal, I've always been intrigued by the roots of rock music, and besides being a blues fan, especially of the rural Delta blues of the late 1920's and the 1930's, I've also checked out jazz, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt and others including Lonnie Johnson who all lay claim to eventually developing pop and rock and roll as we know it today.
And, being from Jordan's home state of Arkansas, after listening to Joe Jackson's reading of '40's swing classics on "Jumpin' Jive" for several years I decided why not go to the real deal? To my amazement even though I was familiar with some of his tunes, Jordan leaped out and convinced me that he more than any other swing era band was the link between blues, especially Chicago jump style, which was Muddy Waters' trademark, and rock and roll, thanks to a distinctive boogie woogie style that links the blues to the early rock and rollers like super glue.
Plus, Jordan was funny on top of being an ace musician. His records sold millions, with cuts like "Nobody Here But Us Chickens", "Let The Good Times Roll", later covered by Ray Charles, "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" and the funny "Open The Door Richard" and "Beware Men Beware".
The Tympani Five was a top notch tight act, with Jordan's smooth vocals except when he was being silly, great boogie woogie piano and the occasional guitar licks that cannot be described as anything else but rock and roll.
This was not the music of the upper crust. It was played in dank dangerous clubs in black parts of the cities, and only after rock and roll was deemed safe did Jordan begin to receive his credit due as a rock and roll pioneer.

This Louis Jordon disc may have been remastered but that don't mean a thing even if it got the swing.
This disc sounds terrible, not even good enough for the car on a rainy night. Has a good selection of
well known Jordon tunes but the quality of the sound reproduction is just terrible. Best thing one can
do with this disc is cover it with stick-on felt and make a coaster out of it---that poor! I will bet
"Jasmine Records", ( the producer/ distributor ) $1000 US dollars that Amazon offers at least 5 other discs that sound vastly superior to this unit. Stay way away from this one!

This recording sounds terrific and is so very enjoyable and fun. I have been to a live performance of "The 5 Guys Named Moe" and they did many of the songs encluded on this CD. Difficult to believe that this CD was even more fun than what we heard at the performance. Get this to have good listening any old night.

i don't know alot about jazz, but i love this cd! it sticks in my head and stays for days-always puts me in a good mood. if you're a runner, like me, louis jordan is just the kinda guy's songs you wanna have goin' through your head-or through your i-pod.
every one of these rockin' blues numbers has got great jazz cat lyrics and singin'. louis' arrangements are top notch, featuring cracker jack bands, with the boys in the band adding great back-up vocals. the title track, "caldonia's boogie," and "early in the morning," are off the top of my head favorite tracks. rocker, jim dickinson, covered "early..." on his last album, check out jim and his cover versions, you won't be disappointed.
don't know what else i can rave about this cd-other than, the songs are great-the playin's great-and louis had a great voice-definitely check this one out.
