I looked into a number of box and in this case tower graters before deciding on this one. I considered the Oxo Good Grips Box Grater, but several reviewers said that the metal parts on it - the parts that do the actual grating - feel flimsy and tend to be undesirably flexible.

The Progressive International Jumbo Tower Grater is not flexible, and it is as ergonomic as I imagine the Oxo is (I own several Oxo kitchen products and all are extremely comfortable to hold).

The one caveat I have about it is that because of its shape, I've had grated cheese get stuck in the narrow upper area of the inside of the grater. Now I know that when using the smallest grates (which are on one side of the grater side by side with the zester holes) with cheese that has any stickiness at all to it (e.g., the hardest Parmesan would be an exception, while even the hardest cheddars I've tried get stuck), I should begin grating motions lower down on the tower so that the cheese I grate doesn't get stuck in the narrow area closer to the top of the tower.

Other than that I love the grater. One side has standard cheese grating holes. One side has oversized grates which yield ribbons of cheese, and the third side (this grater has 3 sides total) is, as I mention above, divided into two side by side sections, one for zesting and the other for fine grating.

It feels very sturdy and stable, and I like that there is a (Phillips head) screw and a washer holding the handle to the grater, because that means that the handle can be tightened should it ever come loose, and it can be detached should I ever feel the need to give the entire grater the most thorough cleaning possible.Read more ›

I whole-heartedly endorse the statement made by previous reviewers: this is, hands-down, the best grater I have ever used. The tripod shape prevents wobbling, and the rubber knob on top provides a firm, ergonomic grip that fits right into the hollow of the palm. I can burn through a block of cheese or a stack of carrots with this baby! Hash browns or potato latkes are a breeze.

Unlike one of the other reviewers, I have not had any problem with the feet coming off. Overall, it seems to be excellently constructed, and all the rubber pieces remain firmly attached. Also, after two years of use, it remains sharp, effective, and shiny, without a speck of rust.

I highly recommend this grater!

Fabulous kitchen tool! Rubber base protectors and ball top hold the grater in place for stability. Won't slip in your hand and does a great job on ginger, carrots, cheese, whatever. A great value.

This is an amazing piece of kitchen equipment! After years of shaving off my fingernails or fingertips using different graters, or having them slip off the plate I'm grating onto... this is truly a pleasure to behold (and to be held!) The triangular design along with the little rubber feet make it incredibly stable while grating anything from cheddar to ginger to chocolate. The knob is big enough to be comfortable without cramping your hand... and all it really takes is just a bit of pressing down from the top to keep it steady. I gave these as Christmas presents, and got rave reviews!

Hash browns. I'm a pretty good cook but hash browns have been perplexing me. The first step was to obtain a potato ricer to strain and remove the water from the shredded potatoes (just to wring the water out, not like how it's used for mashed potatoes) and the second step was to get a good grater, I was sick of skinning my knuckles and wearing my wrist sore with my flat one.

This grater is great. I can shred a potato in a fraction of the time that it took with my old grater, and I love the bigger than normal holes on the one side (it has the other typical shred sizes too, with one larger one).

Now my hash browns rock the house!

Works great for cheese, too.

I'm grateful for the great grater!

1) The shape makes it unstable on your counter so it moves around a lot.
2) small surface area, so it takes a lot longer to grate something
3) impossible to clean on the inside up at the top, making it a safety hazard
4) But, hey, it sure looks cool, huh?
Forget it; get one of those cheap, four-sided graters from the supermarket.

Althought this grater has more style than most kitchen gadgets, it does not perform as well. It will grate anything you like, but it will take longer and your hands will hurt more. I find the classic, handle on top, four sided graters much easier and faster to use. Bottom line: for light grating, if you need some cheese grated once in a while it will function beautifuly, but for heavy duty every day use I do not recommend this item.

I thought this grater looked great out on the counter and it does shred ok. The problem is cleaning it. Cheese and the like tend to get stuck up at the top which makes it very difficult to clean. Also, the little plastic feet started to come off so it wasn't worth it to even keep it anymore and we just pitched it.
