Mckenna was in his late forties when he made this album and had yet to reach the pinnacle of his powers, which I personally believe was a decade later. Still, his playing along with his interesting interpretations of the songs are jaw-dropping on every track.

Give the sound samples on this page a run through, While they do not capture the full genius of his arranging and playing, they are enough to give you a sense of this album. Sine McKenna is solo you can hear every nuance. That is enhanced by the recording and mastering, both of which are well done.

This album is actually the original eleven tracks, and bonus tracks from the same session that was recorded on June 1 and 2, 1977. What I love, though, is the material. The song selections not only have a strong nostalgic appeal for me, but are perfect for McKenna's interpretation. Sometimes the melody is hinted at, and sometimes it's in your face, but what is a constant on every track is McKenna's playing, which is almost like having a brain in each finger.

Bottom line: if you love great piano playing this is a wonderful album. Me and my pianist listen to this (and other McKenna albums) on the way to gigs, and they inspire us to play out best. For casual listening it will transport you to another time and place if you allow it.

Dave McKenna is at his best playing solo piano, as on this two-day session in the studio from 1977. McKenna's strength lies in his basslines and his ability to uplift tunes that often sound hackneyed in the hands of lesser musicians, such as "My Melancholy Baby" and "Somebody Stole My Gal," both of which find the pianist at his most inventive. Also present are overlooked gems like Zez Confrey's "Stumbling" and Irving Berlin's moving ballad "All Alone," played with the melodic swing that jazz fans have come to expect of McKenna. This long-unavailable LP was finally reissued on CD in 2000, with the addition of five bonus tracks, including a loping but brisk treatment of Bob Wills' Texas swing hit "San Antonio Rose" as well as obscurities like the rollicking "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place" and "Willie the Weeper." This solo piano CD should be considered essential by fans of swing.

Dave McKenna was a local (Boston) legend on the keyboard. He played almost every night at the Copley Plaza and had a reputation as great as George Shearing. But while his selections were a little subdued for his Copley audience, he really lets loose on his recordings. McKenna's jazz style is unique. His fingering is fast and crisp and can always be recognized as his own. I don't think this particular recording was not one of his best, but you can't go wrong with Dave McKenna.
