Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Although he's described playing the role of Roger as a mere "stepping stone," Adam Pascal made it to the cover of Newsweek thanks to his part in the Rent phenomenon--and the dramatic edge he brought to his doomed character. While he's continued his work in musical theater with the blockbuster Elton John/Tim Rice show Aida, Pascal returns to his roots as a rock singer on Model Prisoner. His debut solo CD--with backing from Saturday Night Live alumni band members--comes out on Internet-based Sh-K-Boom Records, a label interested in bridging the musical theater-pop music gap for a hip young audience. In fact, Pascal's pre-Rent years were spent fronting a band called Mute; the singer's brand of raw energy makes it clear he's spent a lot of time admiring the likes of Axl Rose and Queensryche. No doubt that the rough passion of his delivery goes some way toward compensating for the repeatedly formulaic quality of his tunes (Pascal wrote 10 of the album's 12 songs)--which can range from leftover hair-metal choruses to dirty-blues-framed laments. But what always comes through is the unmistakable intensity of Pascal's voice, and its ability to shift and shade the moods being expressed. Pascal may be at a crossroads, but he's determined not to be held prisoner by the patterns his fame has cut out so far. --Thomas May

Product Description

After years spent in rock bands, Adam Pascal made his off-Broadway debut as Roger in "Rent," going on to win Obie and Theater World Awards plus Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations for his performance. He is currently starring on Broadway in Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida." "Model Prisoner," his debut solo CD of original compositions, is a deeply personal album that is the culmination of years of work as a musician and as a writer. The album brings together Adam's roots in rock music with his passionate performance style. Songs: Liken a Razor, Just Here to the Left of You, Every Time Around, Model Prisoner, Which Way to Nowhere, Time It Takes to Fall, Ordinary Boy, Cellophane Sun, The One That Got Away, Precious Little Meltdown, Rhyme and Reason, Undiscovered.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most gorgeous voice in the world., February 17, 2003
I had never even heard of Adam Pascal before January 7 of this year, the same date I went to see the traveling company of AIDA. Granted, Adam Pascal was /not/ our Radames, but, after seeing the production, I was in LOVE with AIDA. I had already purchased the AIDA soundtrack, and I had received the RENT soundtrack on Christmas. And yet I still had no clue who he was.

It didn't take long for me to fall in love, though. After listening to AIDA nonstop for about a week, I realized that the voice of Radames was highly familiar, yet I couldn't put my finger upon where I'd heard it before. Later that day, I was listening to "One Song Glory" from RENT, when it just hit me -- That's where I'd heard his voice before!

Two weeks later, I was the proud owner of his cd, Model Prisoner.

His voice is rough and soulful, and yet extremely relaxing at the same time. I've never heard anyone with as wonderful a voice as Adam. Adam Pascal is definitely my favorite singer, and I am very picky about singers. Ewan McGregor -- even though he's technically not a singer -- was my favorite singer for nearly two years before I heard Adam's gorgous voice. And now I can have an actual singer topping my list, instead of an actor with an amazing voice.

I highly recommend this cd. And I recommend the AIDA and RENT soundtracks, which also feature his beautiful voice. I love Adam Pascal!

5.0 out of 5 stars nothing sounds as sweet as this..., July 13, 2000
There exists no words in the free world that can truly describe the beauty of Adam Pascal's voice :) There's something powerful and haunting in his voice that leaves you wanting more. And of course, for all you RENTheads, Adam's voice is as beautiful and distinctly "Adam" as it is on the RENT soundtrack - and we all know how GOOD he sounds on that!

Model Prisoner is a brilliant CD - no doubt about it. I bought it as soon as it came out and I was not disappointed. The CD is highly personal, as you will be able to tell through the lyrics of each song. My favorites are "Liken A Razor", "Every Time Around", "The Time It Takes To Fall", "The One That Got Away", etc... Well, okay, I LOVE them all. There's a little bit of everything for everyone.

At first I had expected something more like MUTE or APB - that sort of hard rock, grungy guitar type sound. But this CD is nothing like that. It's more folksy, more upbeat. But despite the initial shock, I fell in love with the CD immediately.

BUY THIS CD. If you love Adam, you'll love this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adam Pascal is Genius, September 1, 2000
By Emma (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
Model Prisoner is a cd written by a man who also does lead vocals and guitar on the cd, who is married, starring in a successful b'way play(AIDA),starred in a play that he helped jump from off-b'way to b'way(RENT), is close with his fans, is not bad on the eyes, and even more. I mean, this guy can do it all. I'm not into the hard rock sounds of Mute and APB, his bands, so I hesitatedl, unfortunately, do purschase Model Prisoner. The cd rocks. It is, what I would call, Pop-rock. There are a few sweet, slow-ish ballads, a few more rock-ish sounds, there's something for everybody. So, with that said...go get the cd! Model Prisoner by Adam Pascal! You'll love it! no day but today, emma
