Amazon.com Review

Daisy, a television journalist, has gone to Merlock's castle for an unannounced interview. Merlock doesn't appreciate Daisy's in-your-face interview tactics and holds her hostage while he comes up with a plan to take over the world. So, it's up to Donald Duck to rescue Daisy in Goin' Quackers.

The game gives players instructions as they progress through the levels. When you come to something new, Donald's nephews explain what's going on. While not having to read an instruction book is nice, the game explains so many simple concepts from the beginning that this feature hinders more than it helps. For instance, gift boxes contain power-ups. Power-ups are good. You should get them.

The game's graphics quality varies greatly throughout. For example, some of the buildings show great detail while, in another area, it can be difficult to tell whether you're facing a cliff or a thorny plant. Also, while Donald is superbly animated, the game's many textures look grainy compared to those of other PS2 titles.

The sound, on the other hand, is spot on. The sound effects are also pleasantly cartoon-like, but the voices are annoying, especially Donald's.

Experienced gamers will blow through this one, assuming they want to, and younger gamers will find the game sufficiently challenging and fun. But gamers young and old will agree: There's nothing to like about Donald's new voice. --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Platform-style Disney game
  • Cartoon-like sound effects
Cons:
  • Too similar to the Crash Bandicoot game series
  • Obtrusive help feature
  • Annoying game voices

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Ok, but not great...., December 27, 2000
By Jeremy D. Guthrie "plethera1" (Jacksonville, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I did not buy this game but rented it. The game is slightly challenging but the format is annoying. It is a 3D scrolling type game which does not appeal to me at all since the invention of games such as Mario 64 for N64 which allow for some sort of investigation of each level. The fact that each level is timed is also annoying and adds a level of frustration for inexperienced users. The game would be a welcome addition to the PS2 lineup if it didn't cost as much as other games which have obviously put a lot more work into the programming of the game. All in all, this game seems like a PSX game on the PSX2. I originally thought the game was made for younger gamers but I found the game to be too hard for inexperienced gamers. Bottom line: If you enjoy the scrolling type games then you will probably like it, otherwise, I would stay away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, DOnald is a hoot!, January 17, 2001
Okay, I firstly don't understand why a hard-core RPG type gamer would review a game like this and call it lousey. This game is not too easy. There are special moves, secret places and lots of fun stuff. The animation and graphics are almost movie quality and it is very smooth and fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers, March 27, 2001
By "naomiii" (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
If you like the Crash Bandicoot series, then you'll like this game. It's a 3D scrolling platform-type game with timed levels where you collect items, stomp on enemies, smash boxes, jump over holes, climb over obstacles and collect milkshakes to keep Donald alive & happy.

This is the story: Daisy has been kidnapped by Merlock and you (Donald, of course) have to save her. Donald's friend Gyro has invented a machine that can teleport Donald to Merlock's castle so that you can save Daisy, but first you have to collect parts to make it more powerful. So you get sent through different parts of the world to collect cogs & such, and beating various bosses along the away. Huey, Louie and Dewey hang around to give Donald tips and teach him "Special Moves". Though it appears to be a kids' game, it's actually pretty challenging & at times frustrating, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger gamers.

Like I said, if you like the Crash series, then you'll probably like this game. Overall it has PS2-worthy graphics & speed, decent plot depth and good gameplay. It's definitely worth trying out, but rent it before you buy it.
