Could this be the beginning of a kinder, gentler Pokémon? Rather than the usual battles of the pocket monsters between Ash and the sordid Team Rocket, a love story of sorts has descended upon Viridian City in this latest trio of adventures from the popular television series. In the first episode, it's "Lights, Camera, Quack-tion" when a famous movie director, Mister Spielbunk, shows up to shoot a movie about two love-struck Pokémon. As Misty, Ash, and Brock dream of stardom, the question remains, "Which Pokémon will get the starring role?" Will it be brain-impaired Psyduck or the mighty Meowth? This cliffhanger continues in the second episode, "Go West, Young Meowth," when it's off to Hollywood for our favorite Pokémon feline. We discover that years prior, Meowth lived, and loved, in Tinseltown; now we find out who stole his heart, and how he joined Team Rocket. Meowth's tale of love is bittersweet, "like a cheap chocolate bar," he cries. Things get even richer in the final segment, "To Master the Onixpected" when Ash learns the real secret of Pokémon after spending time with Bruno, an Elite Four Pokémon master. Rumor has it that to become the biggest, baddest Pokémon trainer, one must defeat the ominous Onix. Ash learns the truth of the Pokémon power, which has more to do with kindness than bravado. Though there are still moments of derring-do, this may be the gentlest of Pokémon flicks, and a good choice for the uninitiated viewer. Parents concerned about imitative behavior (like slap attacks) should remain cautious. (Ages 4 to 10). --Lynn Gibson

5.0 out of 5 stars Meowth!, April 23, 2002
By A Customer
Wow! Meowth has a fasinating history! It's touching and genuine (for Poke`Mon). Everything seems to make more sense after watching "Go West, Young Meowth." In the words of Meowth, "My story is a bittersweet one, like a cheap chocolate bar." 5 stars, Meowth!

4.0 out of 5 stars Yet another Pokemon video..., March 21, 2001

(REAL NAME)
If you've ever bought a Pokemon video, you know what's in store here, three episodes from the TV series. These episodes were pretty good, but weren't as action filled as other eps. In the first episode, "Lights, Camera, Quacktion", the gang runs into movie producer Sven Spigelburg who needs a Pokemon for a co-starring role along side his star, Wigglytuff, in the movie, "Pokemon In Love". However, the only Pokemon that Wigglytuff gets along with is Psyduck! Next comes "Go West, Young Meowth". This is one of the rare episodes that focus almost entirely on Team Rocket! They follow Ash and company to Hollywood to the premier of Pokemon In Love. Along the way, Meowth tells the story of how he learned to talk like a human! Finally, in "To Expect The Onix-Pected!", our heroes run into a rampaging Onix as well as Elite Member Bruno, who teaches Ash that the real secret to understanding Pokemon lies within. All and all, this is a good buy, especially if you're looking for Pokemon episodes that don't have a battle every five minutes! ;)
