Biography

A former staffer at the embassy in London, Frenchman Laurent Garnier began DJing in Manchester during the late '80s and became by the following decade one of the best all-around DJs in the world, able to span classic deep house and Detroit techno, the harder side of acid/trance and surprisingly jazzy tracks as well. He added production work to his schedule in the early '90s, and recorded several… Read more in Amazon's Laurent Garnier Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Laurent Garnier--the original funky Frenchman, house and techno impresario, label boss, and DJ who first dared the world to believe that French dance music could be cool--returns with his first album since 1998's distinctly patchy 30. Unreasonable Behaviour is much better. "Sounds from the Big Babou," the initial single from this long player, is a great lolloping hunk of funky analog filth, with a cool tune to boot: just what the world and its dancing dog like. "The Man with the Red Face" takes the usual techno-no-go area of saxophone solos and honks, and squawks it through some seriously energized tech-house grooves. "Dangerous Drive," with its minimalist techno, lives up to its name by packing a heaving dance floor into a Ferrari and taking it on a top-speed rampage down some twisty mountain tracks. In between there are moments of electro reflection, gently mellowing tech-house and flatulent synth sounds pootling around being friendly, chilled, and tuneful. Not that unreasonable at all. --Robert Heller

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Unreasonable!, December 2, 2001
Imagine, that you're sitting in your favourite chair, after buying Unreasonable Behaviour to your record-collection. You push the play-button, and as "The Warning" is played, you think, that this isn't a normal record. Suddenly "City Sphere" is played, and as you raise yourself to push the stop-button on your stereo, something in you is saying, that you should give the record a try. One hour after you started the record, you press the repeat-button. Unreasonable Behavoiur is a fabulous record.
Garnier spent about 2 years planning and producing UB, and it was worth it. Garnier pushes it off on his synths and keys, and makes you another person for 69 minutes. "The Sound of the Big Babou" and "Cycles D'Oppositions" are the top spins on UB; you'll never realize, that these two records has ended, even if you hear something totally different. "The Man With The Red Face" is a 9-minute-long track, and though it can get a little boring, it's a brilliant track (same with "Dangerous Drive"). "Forgotten Thoughts" and "City Sphere" are filled with beauty, where Garnier does his best to make the tracks exactly, as he want them. Two tracks on the record are only 1 and a half minute long ("The Warning" and "Unreasonable Behaviour"), but somehow they sound good after you heard them some times. "Downfall", "Communications from the Lab" and "Last Tribute from the 20th Century" are great tracks, that concentrate in giving the most amazing view for the customer, that makes him think, that he is something.
UB can't be replaced by any other record. Buy it, you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars innovative - it works, February 2, 2001
By SL (RI) - See all my reviews
Laurent Garnier isn't just "DJ-ing" anymore. He's considered himself a performer, a musician. In fact, he is quite an amazing artist--quite innovative, captivating. LG is also joined by 2 other musicians one on keyboard/synth and the other on various brass and electronic wind doobries. 'Unreasonable Behaviour' is in a genre of its own. I am not sure how to categorize this album. It's obvious that "UR" is different from your ordinary techno/dance album. It finds LG in an exploratory mood. Performing with groups of live musicians and playing at the Montreal Jazz festival has given some of the tracks an anti-dancefloor, jazzy feel. LG claims his preferred listening material, is currently Lenny Kravitz and Herbie Hancock, a rather surprising revelation from a man whose just won Best International Dance DJ award by the musical press. Check it out. If you want something different, something artistic and innovative, this is a good album. If you were thinking of getting some hi-nrg techno stuff try something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars unreasonable chill!, November 4, 2000
By bas (Holland, the Hague) - See all my reviews
The first time I listened this CD I only liked a couple of numbers. But after listening more times I realised that every number on this CD is a very good and original number. The man with the red face is a number you will like after the first time you listen to it. Greed(part 1+part2), downfall and all the others after that. You can listen to this CD if you want to party and if you wanna chill and relex and that's why it is a CD you got to have in your collection!!
