I have replace a 20 year old Craftsman belt sander with the 9903 Makita. I always fought with the Craftsman's tracking. I could only go 5 minutes before I needed to adjust the tracking. The Makita is not like this at all. It has perfect tracking! I pulled the 9903 out of the box and it tracked OK with the stock belt. But when I put a 3M belt on it and tweeked the tracking a bit I have not touched the tracking, even when I changed the belt to a different grit.

I highly recomment this belt sander and 3M (purple) sanding belts. You can turn 9903 over and clamp it to the bench, great feature. It has a very nice trigger lock button, easy to set when you want to set it - but not so easy to lock when you don't want it locked (with either hand). An added benefit is that this belt sander is that it is very quiet (as belt sanders go).

My only complaint is with the availability of accessories. I can't find a sanding frame or a vacuum attachment. When I went to an authorized dealer for Makita and asked for a quote on a sanding frame they quoted the housing of the 9903.

Buy this one, you won't be disapointed.

I bought the 21" Makita 9903 Belt Sander after my old Skil 18" sander's on/off switch stopped working for the umpteenth time, and my other el-cheapo 21" belt sander was stolen (thank goodness for small favors).

I've used the sander now for a month to sand down 2x6 and 4x4 rough sawn surfaces on redwood and doug fir I've used for finishing a deck (railings, fascia, stair trim). Absolutely perfect tracking all the time, no matter how hot the belt gets, no matter how much pressure I apply, no matter how long I've used the belt. I start with a 50 or 80 grit, then shift directly to a 120 grit belt for final finishing. I've sanded approx. 20 4x6 16 ft boards, both sides and edges, plus another 10 4x4 8ft posts... all 4 sides, among other things this far.

Power galore and perfect belt tracking, simple adjustment to bring belt to edge if needed (and it stays there)... what more could a belt sander need to do? Changing belts is just as simple as with any other belt sander I've used over the years --- pull back on the clamping lever (it says open), slip belt on, close clamping lever... and let 'er rip.

I also very much like the flat 'top' which allows you to turn the sander over and sit it on it's 'top' to use the belt surface as the stationary member while holding the work piece by hand to shape edges, corners, etc. with much greater precision of cut (hand held piece, as opposed to holding the sander).

I also own a Makita sawzall (or whatever they're called) and have owned and used it extensively for several years (purchased in 1992? or '95? or somewhere in that time-frame). It's been extremely reliable, never any problem in the most demanding work I have thrown at it...

A pleasure to use. Relatively quiet. Belt tracks flawlessly. Adequate power. Can clamp upside down in a wood worker's bench vice to use as a stationary sander. Dust collector works well and is usually not in the way. Wish it came with it's own case. All in all I am very happy with the purchase.

This sander has plenty of power for its size, and the vacuum bag actually sucks up quite a bit of the dust without spraying it right back in your face. Tracking is decent and the fact that the right side and top are flat and ready to be clamped down to any available surface makes it great for occasional bench sanding.

What I don't like is how off-balance it is--it really likes to roll toward the left on account of the motor's weight and it's pretty hard to tell whether or not you're holding it level until it's too late. Compound this problem with the fact that the optional sanding shoe/frame is both $114 extra AND discontinued and you've got some pretty heavy cons. I made my own frame out of 3/4" MDF, but it's obviously pretty heavy and not especially durable.

I also have a problem with the placement of the speed adjustment knob--it gets coated in dust almost instantly and becomes impossible to read without a shot of compressed air. I worry about how long it will last before the potentiometer fizzles out.

There seem to be an awful lot of reviews of belt sanders from all manufacturers where customers complain about Amazon shipping them a used unit as new. I too suspected this had happened to me upon opening the box as mine was covered in what appeared to be sawdust. A closer inspection however revealed that this was in fact just cardboard that had gotten sanded by the belt as the unit was thrown around during shipping. No harm, no foul.

If you plan on doing a lot of leveling, I'd consider the DeWalt as you can pick up their frame just about anywhere. Otherwise, there's quite a bit of bang for your buck here. It looks boxy and awkward, but those bad looks really add to the versatility of the machine.

UPDATE: Just talked to Makita on the phone and they confirmed that the sanding shoe accessory is no longer being made by anyone and they have no plans to design or produce a replacement model. Boo.

This summer I chemically stripped the varnish off 100+ year-old maple flooring and needed to sand the floor boards. The room is really small so I decided that instead of renting a floor sander I'd try using a belt sander. After reading lots of reviews on Amazon, I decided on this one. I've owned two belt sanders - the first one worked okay but it was old and the wiring started on fire. Then I made the mistake of buying a cheap one and it had a loud whine and the belt wouldn't stay on track no matter what I did. I hated using it so ended up selling it for $5 at a garage sale.
This Makita sander is simply awesome. It's very powerful - for the most part I just guided it and didn't have to bear down at all. I was also able to fairly easily level off a few boards that were higher than adjacent ones but I had to be careful - to start with I bore down too hard and made some grooves that I had to even out. It's pretty quiet and just sounds like a quality machine, if that makes sense. The auto-tracking feature works perfectly, I went thru at least 10 belts of various grits (the 3M purple ones...) and never had one problem with the tracking. The dust bag works well, too, but I ended up attaching it to a small shop-vac instead so I didn't have to keep emptying the bag.
I am so glad that I bought this one - it was worth every penny, I would definitely buy it again, and the floor looks great.
