This compilation collects a couple dozen dance band sides recorded for legendary Gennett Records of Richmond, Indiana from 1923-1925. There's some marginally hot stuff here, but many of the performances are rather uninspired. No Wolverines here, no NORK or Jellly Roll Morton--those have been reissued elsewhere. Instead, we are treated to some lesser-known bands, many of them from the Mid-west. An exception is Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians, featured in their very first recordings. For the most part, this is straightforward pop dance music with a hint of jazz. Some of the hotter numbers include "Angry," "Hot Aire," "Steppin' In Society," and "Cy." For me, the real standout on the album is Ross Reynolds' "Creole"--a tune that would later be recorded almost note-for-note by Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers under the title "Smokehouse Blues."

Timeless Records usually puts out CDs with fantastic sound quality, but I'm afraid they missed the boat here. The tracks sound overprocessed, tinny, and muffled, with occasional digital artifacts creeping in. Thankfully they stopped at that and didn't add any artificial reverb or phony stereo as some other labels do. Still, the quality doesn't live up to most other Timeless discs.

Die-hard 1920s dance band fans will want this disc despite the sonic flaws. If you're looking for a general 1920s compilation, however, you would be better off with another collection. Musically, this doesn't represent the best the '20s had to offer. I pull this CD off the shelf every now and then to hear a track or two, but it's not a disc I find myself listening to from start-to-finish. It's good, but not essential.

The Gennett label is well-known to collectors of classic jazz, but the hot output of 1920s white dance bands, particularly those which recorded at the Richmond studies, is less well-known. Timeless has compiled two volumes to help overcome that neglect, the first of which begins in New York in 1923 with the first two recordings made by Howard Lanin (one of Sam Lanin's many younger siblings).

That's followed by four groups, all of which were recorded in Richmond. The first represents Guy Lombardo's recording debut, which gives no warning of "the sweetest music this side of heaven" later to emanate from the Royal Canadians. The Romance of Harmony Orchestra is an unknown entity, apart from the two numbers presented here which were recorded for private sale, and thus are extremely rare but no less outstanding. The Lange-McKay Orchestra existed as a joint venture, and recorded as such in October 1924, although both Henry Lange and Marion McKay led their own bands both before and after the event. Ross Reynolds Palais Garden Orchestra made but two recordings, the first of which, "Creole", served as the basis for both "African Echoes" by Tony Parenti's Liberty Syncopators, and "Smoke House Blues" by Morton's Red Hot Peppers. Both are played with great gusto, by a group which clearly knew what it was about.

We shift back to New York for the next two bands. Perley Breed is best remembered for his participation in English recordings by Ambrose, and the Rhythmic Eight, but that came later. He recorded just three numbers for Gennett, all popular numbers of the day, which reflect a small-group jazz treatment. In contrast, Richard Hitter & his Blue Knights recorded two outright jazz numbers in September 1925.
